Margaret Bradley Award

Margaret L. Bradley was a member of GBTC who died while on a trail run through the Grand Canyon on July 10, 2004, at the age of 24. Margaret ran the 2003 Chicago marathon in 2:58:52, and led the GBTC women’s team to victory in the 2004 Boston marathon with a time of 3:04:54, finishing as the 31st woman. Margaret lived in Chicago in 2003 and 2004, and while living there she competed with the Universal Sole track club, aiming to qualify for the 2008 Olympic marathon trials.
GBTC has established the Margaret Bradley Award in honor of Margaret. The intent of the award is to select one GBTC female runner annually to compete in a domestic event of her choosing for which GBTC will cover some or all of the expenses. The selected recipient must be a club member in good standing who shares Margaret’s enthusiasm and dedication toward both personal and team goals. The recipient should be an open runner who is likely to perform at a high level in the event of her choosing.
GBTC manages an endowment that will enable this award to be given in perpetuity. You can make a tax-deductible donation to the endowment using the Donate button at the top of the page.

Recipient Bios
Chloe Pangonis, 2024

Chloe joined GBTC in 2017 as a middle distance runner but has been training for the marathon for the past few years. She has competed in several Boston Marathons and has a marathon PR of 2:58, a half marathon PR of 1:24 and a 20 miler PR of 2:13. Chloe enjoys training with her marathon teammates on GBTC, long runs on the Charles, and spending time with her rescue dog, Dasher
Caroline Turner, 2019

The Greater Boston Track Club is pleased to announce that Caroline Turner is the 2019 recipient of the annual Margaret Bradley Award. Caroline joined the club in the summer of 2017 and quickly became an integral part of the women’s distance squad. Caroline competed in the 2017 USATFNE Cross Country Grand Prix series where GBTC tied for first, and then at USATF Club Nationals. After that, she turned to the roads and debuted in the marathon in 3:00:27. Caroline was the only GBTC member to compete in the entirety of the 2018 USATFNE Road Grand Prix and led the team to a 2nd place finish out of 26 teams. In the fall of 2018 she was elected to the Board of Directors by her teammates and serves as the Women’s Team Captain. In the spring of 2019 she will be taking on the Boston Marathon with many of her teammates.
Prior to joining GBTC, Caroline competed for Needham High School, a perennial cross country and track powerhouse in the Bay State. She then ran for Davidson College, where she lowered her PRs to 17:57 and 37:14. While she enjoyed the warmer climes, Caroline was thrilled to return to the Boston running scene and excited to find GBTC where she could learn from, and train with, so many accomplished runners. Coach Tom Derderian says, “Caroline is ubiquitous at practices, team events, and races. She personifies the NASA motto, ‘Teamwork is what makes the dream work.’”
Kyle MacQueen Feldman, 2018

The Greater Boston Track Club is pleased to announce that Kyle MacQueen Feldman is the 2018 recipient of the annual Margaret Bradley award. Kyle joined GBTC back in 2009, and immediately became an integral member of the women’s distance squad, often scoring for the Club at the Grand Prix road races. After joining the Club, Kyle excelled on both the roads and on the track, running PRs in every event from the 1500m up to the Marathon. At one point in 2012, Kyle held three club records at the same time: 1500m (4:24.66), Mile (4:49.74), and 3000m (9:32.30). Two records have since been broken, but she still holds the 1500m record to this date.
Kyle and her husband, GBTC team member, Will Feldman moved out of state from 2013 to 2017, but immediately re-joined the Club, once they were back in Boston. “There’s no running scene greater than Boston’s,” said Feldman. “I really missed the Club and my teammates when we moved away. I am thrilled to be back again and representing GBTC.”
Prior to joining GBTC, Kyle had run at the University of Connecticut where she met current club member and 2011 Margaret Bradley award winner, Allison McCabe. During her junior year, Kyle transferred to Simmons College in Boston, which did not have a running program at the time. When Allison learned that Kyle was living in Boston, she encouraged her to join the team. Kyle joined the Club in the spring of 2009 after qualifying for the 2009 Boston Marathon at the 2008 Philadelphia Marathon. Her time at the Philadelphia Marathon was 3:21:35. After joining the Club, and training more consistently, Kyle improved her marathon time to a speedy 2:49:14. Kyle now has dreams of qualifying for the Olympic Marathon Trials, a dream that was also shared by Margaret Bradley.
Madeline Weber, 2017

Madeline Weber, veteran member and GBTC President, is the 2017 Margaret Bradley Award Recipient. Madeline has excelled on roads and trails since joining the club, and her dedication to the club has shown through on many occasions.
Madeline received the 2016 Coaches Award, and was most recently named president by her fellow board members. She is frequently a scoring member at Grand Prix and Cross-Country races, and has found success on the roads from 5k to the marathon.
Lauren Opachinski, 2016

Lauren Opachinski is this year’s Margaret Bradley Award winner! Lauren played softball all through high school and a little bit in college and had always despised running, but in the fall of 2012, she was looking for a new challenge and decided to try Couch to 5k as a way to prepare for a turkey trot. Something clicked this time around. She did her first half marathon in the spring of 2013 and was officially hooked. Her first marathon was the Boston Marathon in 2014, and after finishing in 4+ hours, she learned that a) running about 25 miles per week and 3 days a week doesn’t cut it for marathons and b) she really wanted to qualify for the Boston Marathon. In the fall of 2014, she ran 3:19 at the Baystate Marathon and realized she wanted to start training a little more seriously. She joined GBTC in the early spring of 2015. Lauren graduated from Boston College in 2009 and currently works at Massachusetts General Hospital as an RN in the Cardiac Surgical ICU. Lauren had a great performance in this year’s hot Boston Marathon and Coach Tom Derderian thinks she has a sub 3 marathon in her near future.
Liz Ryan, 2015

Liz graduated from Brown University in 2013 with a BS in Environmental Science and a BA in Architecture. She currently works as an Architecture Associate at ART Architects in Boston. She began running in middle school with her older sister at the USATF CT Junior Olympics races. At Farmington High School (CT), she left behind downhill skiing, soccer, and tennis in order to join Cross Country and Track under the unforgettable guidance of Chip Apfelbaum. She ran two years on Brown University’s Varsity XC and Track teams. During this time her mileage climbed steadily from 12 miles per week to 45 and her PRs dropped to 10:14 (3k) and 17:50 (5k XC).
While road and cross-country 5Ks are her favorite races, she enjoys the chance to mix it up on the track with the mile and 3k and relays. She ran her first marathon in September 2014 (3:02:33), and is looking forward to more seriously training for that distance in the future, starting with the Boston Marathon in Spring 2015. She attributes all her recent success to her amazingly supportive GBTC teammates and best friends, who cheer her on during Tuesday track workouts, drag her out of bed on the weekend for long runs along the Charles, and never fail to share a post-race beer. Coach Tom Derderian says, “Liz seems ubiquitous, road, track, or trail, and like Margaret is always there to help the club team score as high as possible.”
