+ Stowe, VT, July 16—At the Stowe 8 Miler, GBTC women placed 3rd in open division with the help of new member Audrey Giesler who placed 6th (results). She is newly arrived from Chicago where she ran for the Universal Sole team. Jeremey Borling also from Chicago and Universal Sole led our men's team with a 9th place finish. The two of them proved to be a delightful addition to a trip that was pleasant in every respect except for the hot, humid race itself. The women's team is now third in the overall Grand Prix by one point!

+ GBTC took home three separate pieces of hardware at the National Club Track and Field Championships held in Walnut, CA at Mount San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) on July 15. In the warmth and humidity she led the GBTC women's team to fourth place and past the BAA into second overall in the year's Grand Prix standings. The GBTC women are now three points behind the Merrimack Valley Striders, but only a point ahead of the BAA, and Whirlaway, and 2 points ahead of the Central Mass Striders. The Stowe race on July 16th will be critical. The GBTC men's team placed 6th and is standing 6th in the Grand Prix. An interesting note is that this race marks the return of Wendy Newsham to club competition. She and Bill first met through the club many years ago. It is a wonderful thing that she has come full circle. Welcome back Wendy.

PR's were also set by Jen Busse in the 1500 (4:44) and Katie Famous in the 3K (10:35). Cecily Gallup broke 2:20 in the 800 for the first time in this millenium (seriously, the last time was 1999).  See the full results.

+ May 17, Salisbury -- In the 17th Run for the Roses in Salisbury, MA a top GBTC team negotiated the flooded roads to race for the win in this all-women's road race, but fell short by 200 meters. The race started very quickly with the entire field in contention for the first laps. When Ayila threw in a surge no one could follow. She eased off in the last laps under the hot sun allowing the field to almost catch up.

+ April 30, Brown University — Records weren't just broken at Penn Relays. On Sunday, several GBTC athletes made there way to Brown's Spring Invitational. Leading the way, Jen Hawkes broke the club high jump record, set by Anne Jennings in 1994, with her leap of 1.70 meters (5ft7in) for second place. Jen has been consistently at the 5'6 mark all indoors, and is now really opening things up as she hopes to make the club national trip. Sherita Williams took home the triple jump honors with her winning 13.20 meter jump (43ft3.75in), nearly a foot ahead of BU's Tahari James. Not bad considering she drove back from Penns Saturday night! On the men's side, Thierno Mbacke, also making the road trip back from Penn's Saturday night, earns 5th (out of 14)(57.79) in the 400m intermediate hurdles, just off his season best (results)

Sean Furey wons the Javelin throw representing GBTC, also broke the his own club record and took home a fancy Penn Relays gold watch for his achievement. Joe Otto took home a sleek gold watch, after competing in the 4x400 A-team, ran a corporate DMR with Raytheon, and his 1200 leg contributed to his team's first place. The javelin throw by Sean Furey and women's 4x100 results were both club records.

+ The GBTC men won the Cohasset 10K.  Kit Wells, in preparation for the Boston Marathon or in amends for running off course in the Eastern States 20 miler last week, came to the Cohasset 10 km to win. But he hadn't counted on the vastly experienced Andrew Noble to bolt out to a quick lead with a 4:52 first mile. Wells worked with his teammate, David Bedoya, into the stiff North Atlantic winds along the coast road to reel in Noble, but by the end he remained 31 seconds ahead. Lucas Woodward ran out conservatively and worked his way to 10th with Joe Otto two places back. Along with Peter Warrington, the GBTC men won the team prize. For their team prize they got a big bag of swag including a bottle of wine, four wine glasses, five baseball hats, five sweat shirts, a leather wallet, many key rings, several gift certificates, and other mysterious stuff. Wells and Bedoya got jackets, gift certificates, bouquets of flowers, and more velvet-lined sweat shirts. Ole coach Tom Derderian got a sweat shirt and a shiny thing for mixing or shaking ice with vodka for James Bond or something (results).

+ At the Boston Tune-Up 15k in Upton on April Fool's Day, Emily Raymond easily won the women's race and Megha Doshi showed great recovery after her third place finish at the Eastern States 20 last Sunday. John Joseph Fialkovich valiantly tried to win the whole thing on the men' side. He pushed for the lead and almost got away with it but for three guys who nailed him in the last of the many, many hills on this tough, bucolic course. Conservative starting Tomoaki Uchiki closed with in seconds of Fialkovich, followed shortly by Sam Blasiak. Young Sarad Tomlinsu continues to show that he has a great future as a long distance runner (results).

In the 200m at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, Geraldine (GBTC 60m indoor record holder) avenged her 100m loss to Jamaica's Sheri-Ann Brooks (5th in the 200), but instead fell victim to two other Jamaican born sprinters, Sherone Simpson and Veronica Campbell. Mbathio Diarra completes the female roster with her race in the 200m in 29.91. All in all, the women took 5 of the top 6 spots, and one through four in the 10,000 meters.   Equally exciting, a battle for the top three spots in the men's 10K, each within 5 seconds at the line, we had Ted Breen running down 1st place just steps behind at the finish in 33:27.46. Coach Tom Derderian also made his presence known in the 10K. Our GBTC team lined up with pretty much all the internationally known American women distance runners on Saturday, February 18, in Van Cortland Park in the Bronx in NYC in the USA Cross-country Championships. The scene felt more like the winter Olympics with snow squalls dancing across the course. Our team was Jess Busse, Maegan Chaggaris, Carol Geddes, and Emily Raymond. It was a hard race run in tough conditions after a long trip. Ours are tough runners who valiantly put the club name up on the score board (pictures).

+ The club returned again to Boston University for the annual Saint Valentine's Meeting on February 10-11. This year, the meet was enormous; the largest meet ever held at the new BU facility. GBTC had many excellent performances and personal bests. The women competed Friday night (until almost midnight !), and Sherita Williams continued her undefeated streak by winning the triple jump. Reminiscent of 2003 when 3 women's club records fell, 2 more fell on Friday as Sloan Siegrist topped the 20-year old record in the 3K with a stellar 9:51. Anne Baker, a former top DIII thrower for U-Rochester, shattered the old weight throw mark with a 15 meter heave. Elsewhere, Sara O'Brien won her heats of both the 400 and the 200. On the men's side, former Harvard standout Alasdair McLean-Foreman ran an excellent 8:12 in the 3K to place to take 2nd overall. On the men's side, Jason Dunklee finished the race in 7th place with a time of 55:07 (results).

+ GBTC was out in force at the venerable Terrier Classic January 27-28 with many excellent times, rising to the occasion and running tremendous seasonal bests over previous times earlier in the year.  Friday night, Joe Otto PR'd in the 800 winning his heat and placing 4th (1:53), and Langston Dugger also won his heat of the 400 and led off the relay in a 49.7.  Elsewhere on the track, Kit Wells and Sam Blasiak steamrolled to personal bests in the 3K as they hovered near the 9:00 barrier.  On Saturday, the women met the challenge and ran even better.  Emily Raymond and Jen Busse flew around the track in the 5K running 17:06 and 17:09, #2 and #3 all-time for the club.  Jane Cullina won her heat of the 800 in a time 5 seconds faster than the week before, and Caroline Occean (a BU alumnae) returned to her home track and won her heat of the 500.  Laura Hayden ran her personal best within a second of the club record in the mile with a 4:58.45. The winning prize however, goes to Sloan Siegrist who ran a full 12 seconds faster in the 3K from last weekend and almost broke the club record (9:52) (full results for men and women).

+ On January 15th, a small contingent of GBTCers took to the track at the first Tufts Invitational of the new year. GBTC was led by Sherita Williams who obliterated the competition with a 43 foot triple jump, breaking her own club record, the facility record, and becoming the first GBTC woman this season to qualify for the USATF national championships in February at our own Reggie Lewis facility. Emily Raymond ran a season PR in the 5000 placing second (17:37 - only losing to an All-American from Williams), and Sloan Siegrist opened her season with a 3rd place finish in the 1500. On the men's side, Dan Conti placed 2nd in the pole vault, Joe Otto ran an excellent 1000 meter run to finish 3rd, and the relay team of Langston Dugger, Jerome Mauris, Francis Shen, and Joe Otto ran unopposed in the second heat taking 3rd place overall. + GBTC was well-represented at the BU Mini Meet on the last day of the year.  Andie Colon's 800 was inspiring as he taught a painful last-lap lesson to the boys who tried to beat him. + GBTC Heads to the Big Apple July 15th-17th. For the fifth straight year, GBTC will be participating in the Club National Championships held at the new Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island in New York City. Overall national champions in 2002 and runners-up in 2003 and 2004, GBTC looks to extend the history of excellence in 2005 competing against the nation's best. Our club is one the original teams that competed at the first organized championship in 2001 and always brings the loudest most enthusiastic group (much to the jealousy of the other smaller teams). This year, our teams look stronger than ever, particularly with the return of one of our top sprinters, Stan Egbor, and the addition of another, Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng. The men's throws are much improved as well with a whole new group of javelineers waiting to scoop up some points. On the women's side we have added a slew of long sprinters and middle distance runners. Standouts also include Sherita Williams, a nationally ranked horizontal jumper, and Kateema Riettie, our new club record holder in the javelin. With the new venue closer to home, this championship will surely be the most competitive yet. The club is always looking to increase our participation rate at Club Nationals especially in the longer distances for more info contact Coach Dave Callum (david_callum@yahoo.com).

The club was also the only team to field A and B squads, a testament to the increasing depth in the sprints.

+ On the April 19th weekend, Shaina Damm, while competing at the Sam Howell Invitational Heptathlon at Princeton, broke 5 different club records out of the 7 events scored. Her record breaking marks were 14.1 in the hurdles, 19-5 in the long jump, 41-11 in the shotput, 135-5 in the javelin, and 25.1 in the 200 meters.

+ The club is moving outdoors at the start of April, with workouts beginning March 31 at Harvard and April 8 at Danehy Park.

+ The GBTC masters made their mark at the USATF Masters Indoor National Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Track on March 28-30. The weekend was highlighted by Deke Conklin's tremendous 4.23 (13-6) leap in the 65-69 long jump which earned him the championship by quite a distance. Measure out 13 and little bit in your kitchen then imagine propelling yourself that far at age 68. He also tossed himself over 9 feet in air to take 2nd in the pole vault. Richard "The Doc" Sobel competed in the high jump, leaping nearly 5 feet -- no too shabby considering his entire competitive career was done with the dive straddle; he is just now learning the flop. And of course, Colin McArdle strutted his stuff in the Mile and the 3000, with a sterling 10 minute even run in the 3K. Bob Cedrone, who just two weeks ago PR'd by, as he put it, throwing his age, continued his consistency over 13 meters. Lastly, Sarah Lawson, fresh off of her lovely article in the Globe ("the fastest soccer mom in the state") placed very highly in the 60 and the 200, both of which had trials and finals (results, highlights).

+ In two big wins for GBTC, Stanley Egbor won the 100 meters and Marzuki Stevens won the 10,000 meters at the Husky Spring Open on March 29 in Dedham (results, photos). The same day, Alison Guzman finished fifth in the 5,000 meters (results).

Rain and consequent lack of volunteers at the finish led to many runners being missed in the offical results (results). Rich Voliva won the associated 10 Miler, leading a total of four club members around the course (results).

The women's 4x400 broke the old record from 1988 with stellar legs from everyone for 4:05.32. Joan Bohlke provided a nice anchor leg to bring home a great performance by the home team. For the first time in 5 years or so, we had a women's high jumper in the meet, Erin Newman from Providence College. His 6.30 for the 55 is the best early season performance this club has ever seen, and his astounding 21.60 for the 200 breaks his own club record by a full 0.14 seconds. As Coach Dave Callum says, "This performance highlights what looks to be a great season ahead for Stanley and GBTC." In addition, Blair Schaefer became a hero when, after arriving in civilian clothes to watch, he learned that Mark Lefebvre could not run his leg because the meet schedule lagged and he had to high jump. (photos)

+ The club's holiday party was held at the Mount Auburn Club Cafe on December 5. The club had a good time, with a highlight being the lottery for Boston Marathon numbers.

The club fielded teams in the men's, women's, and men's masters events. The women had an excellent showing placing 4th, while the open men took 5th and the masters team took 7th. The women had an exceptional pack strategy consisting of Melissa Leier, Kristen Brennand, Jessica Blake, Lynn Johnson, and Katie Wasilenko; they all finished within a minute of each other. The master's group was led by fearless Colin McArdle, and would not be complete without a performance by coach Tom Derderian.

+ At the New England Cross-Country Championships on November 10, the women placed 4th (led by Melissa Leier, Kristen Brennand, Jess Blake, Lynn Johnson, and K atie Wasilenko), and the men placed 6th (led by Dennis Floyd, Jason Dunklee, Ben Nephew, Neil Wechsler, and Kit Wells).

GBTC teammate Joan Bolhke took a great fall six minutes into the race but got up all bloody and muddy to finish. Maria Sun finished third for the team. In the men's race, Jason Dunklee led our men's team with Bryan Doldt and Neil Wechsler following. See the final results and some pictures from Oleg Shpyrko.

+ For the first time in history, the Greater Boston Track Club, whose men's team won the entire championship in the early 1980s, fielded both a men's and a women's team in the 1999 USATF National Cross Country Championship in Long Beach on December 5. Be sure to read the whole story!

+ The club has moved indoors. Every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., runners gather in the lobby of the indoor track to warm up, and the practice itself starts at 7:30 p.m. For those of you who still want to run outdoors, river runs are back with a vengence! Every Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., a group of a dozen runners gather and gossip in the lobby of the indoor track before embarking on their 4, 6, or 8 mile run around the Charles River. Runners of all abilities are welcome. Come join us!

+ Christina Manolatou finished in 14th place at the New England Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park on November 14, leading a team of 16 women to sixth place in the 6K race, the largest team in the current era. Glen Mays finished in 13th place, leading the men's open team to a fourth place finish in their 10K race, and Mark Reeder finished in 9th place, leading the men's masters team to sixth place in the 8K race. This regional championship was used to select members to represent the club in the national cross-country championship in California in December. + The GBTC men's cross-country team won the $5000 Home Depot Cross-Country Invitational on October 10, 1999, beating the Syracuse Chargers Track Club with a score of 26 to 30, with the top five GBTC runners finishing within a tight 24 seconds of each other. The team won $600, and team members Glenn Mays and Deon Barrett won $100 and $75 cash prizes for their individual performances. Next stop: the Boston Mayor's Cup at Franklin Park. (full results)

+ Jim Pawlicki won the Yankee Runner 5K at the Governor Dummer Academy on September 26, and Katie Carda finished third.

+ At the Lake Winnipesaukee Relay, the GBTC masters women's team finished second and the GBTC open mixed team finished third. The club had a total five teams running in this 66-mile relay race, a major tradition for the club. (full results, photos)

+ Over the September 18 weekend, Jim Pawlicki won his race in Gloucester; Cynthia Hastings won the five mile town race in Winthrop; Deon Barrett finished 23rd (8th American) at the Harvard Pilgrim Downtown 5 Mile race in Providence; Maura McDonald improved by a full minute her 5K road time of last spring with a 5K cross-country time at the UMass Dartmouth Cross-Country Invitational; and Kerry Saurez ran a much faster time at Fresh Pond. What a weekend.

+ The entire men's open team ran at a pace of less than five minutes per mile at the Brewery Exchange 5K on September 12, finishing in third place. Even the second five men produced a better team than we had last year. Christina Manolatou led our women's open team to a sixth place finish and surprised many with her seventh place finish, and a great race by Judy Romvos lead our women's masters team to its own sixth place finish. See photos of the race and the full race results.

+ Deon Barrett set a new course record of 19:39 at the four-mile Acushnet Road Race on September 6, beating the prior record by 61 seconds, motivating in a nice article about the race in the local paper. In fact, the men's team won the race, beating the Gutterhawk Athletic Club in a friendly rematch after being beaten by the Gutterhawks at the Lynn Woods Relay a just few weeks earlier, and the women's team placed second in their race. Both teams brought home prize money for the club to help fund travel to compete in national-level events coming up in the near future. Thanks to Deon Barret, Glen Mays, Jim Pawlicki, Cam Dauler, and Tom Derderian; and to Livvy Williams, Maura McDonald, Dara Zall, Megan Day, Payal Parekh, and Maria Sun. The same day, Ken Agabian, Mike Olivo, Carmen Danforth, Calvin Williams, and Bob Ward ran the Cape Ann 25K race in horrible, hot, and humid conditions. (Acushnet full results; Cape Ann full results)

+ The GBTC women's open team (named EuroMass) and mixed team (Big Macs and Fries T) won their divisions at the Lynn Woods 4x2.5M cross-country relay on August 25, and the men's open team (Greater Boston Cross) finished second over all. (full results)

+ The club had nine runners in Skyline Trail Race through the Blue Hills Reservation on July 11. Ben Nephew outran every runner in the race, and arrived at the finish line two and a half minutes ahead of anyone else, but he arrived from the wrong direction. He had followed a nonrace trail sign that retraced the starting mile, causing him to run a longer course, still won, was initially disqualified, and then reinstated. Whew. Racing is tough business.

+ At the New England Track Championships on June 19, the Greater Boston Track Club men tied for second place with CMS and the women tied for seventh place with CSU. David Callum, Dave Cahill, Mario Jack, and Johann Jack won the 4x100 relay in 43.04. Johann Jack won the 100 meter and 200 meters. Julie Spolidoro placed ninth in the 1500 meters with 4:35.35, and Dara Zall ran for the club in the 3000 meters, having recovered from recently being hit by a taxi. (full results)

+ The club placed 4th and 6th in the men's and women's open divisions at the New England 10K championship in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on June 12, with Deon Barrett finishing in 6th place. Deon Barrett, Jesse Darley, Arnold Seto, Jim Pawlicki, and Mark Reeder made up the men's team; and Eliane Abeguile, Christina Manolatou, Katie Carda, Sage Green, and Megan Day made up the women's team. There was even a good picture of the team on Cool Running. (full results)

+ The club had 26 performances at the third Twilight Meet on June 12, bringing the number of track performances posted this year by club members to over 400. In this meet, Dave Cahill, Josh Seeherman, and Mark Hickman all won their races in the 100, 200, and mile, respectively. (full results)

+ Joanna Veltri has been injured since the cross-country season, but she reappeared in competition for the first time at the Tufts 5K on May 2, and finished 14th her first time back. Running together with Sue Bergh, Sage Green, Christina Manolatou, Stephanie Tenuto, and Livvy Williams, this group may form a solid women's team in future competition.

+ See results and pictures of the Boston Marathon run on April 19. Deon Barrett and his marathon were the subject of a terrific article in The Standard Times, the newspaper serving his home town of New Bedford.

+ In the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 22, Julie Spolidoro placed 6th in the high school girls 3,000 meters with 10:01:22, and Ethan Crain placed 21st in the men's 5,000 meters with 14:32.29. On Friday, the men's distance medley relay team of Erik Spayde, Ben Pease, Dave Cahill, and Ethan Crain placed 4th with 10:10.18. On Saturday, the men's 4x400 relay team of Terry O'Neill, Sean Ballou, Dave Cahill, Mike Leding placed 4th with 3:26.83 in the "B" flight of this event.

+ The club began the outdoor track season with strong performances at the Snowflake Classic at Tufts University on April 3, including first or second place finishes in many events. Be sure to see pictures and results from that meet. While you are looking around, take a look at a nice picture of Bill Rodgers and the team taken at the Boston College athletic center.

+ Hugh Jessup is making travel arrangements for Manny Pino to come to Boston to run the marathon this month. Manny is the program director for Wings of America, a group that promotes running among young Native Americans, and he will be speaking about his work around Boston while he is here.

+ Jesse Darley nearly won the Law Enforcement Half Marathon, the USATF New England half marathon championship held in Melrose on March 14. Be sure to see the photos from this race. Jesse had the lead at mile 13, shadowed closely by Jack Dwyer (CMS), Rusty Snow (CMS), and Pete Hammer (BRC). Jesse kicked, but so did the shadows. After over an hour of racing, the four runners sprinted in the proximity of elbows. Dwyer, Hammer, and Snow nailed Jesse on the back stretch. All four runners sprinted together in the final 100 meters on the high school track in front of stands filled with cheering people and a blaring PA system. It looked and sounded like an Olympic final. With Jesse's 1:07:26 finish, the men's team placed third with Deon Barrett (1:10:00), Arnold Seto (1:11:14), Jim Pawlicki (1:13:11), and Mark Reeder (1:13:18) rounding out the top five. See the full results.

+ Jesse Darley won the New England Grand Prix ten mile championship in 51:35, beating the BAA's Chris McGill by a second, at the Jones-Town and Country ten-miler in Amherst, Massachusetts, on February 28. The men's team placed fifth overall, with Arnold Seto, Deon Barrett, John Blouin, and Gregory Putnam rounding out the top five finishes for the club. Christina Manolatou, Belinda Crago, and Cynthia Hastings were the club's top three women. Be sure to see the full results and a good article about the race. The club rode in style in a team bus to the big race. This might be the beginning of a new tradition.

+ Jon Berit periodically updates the Track and Field Grand Prix scores. In the future, you can see this current standings by clicking on race results on the left.

+ At the New England Limited meet at Boston University on February 21, the club neared the end of a great indoor season with great performances, including winning the men's USATF New England team title for the second year in a row. High-schooler Julie Spolidoro topped the club list with a 5:06 mile to win the open women's mile. She does not run track for her high school, but her time would have come close to winning the all-state high school meet. Christine Manolatou ran 5:40 in only the second mile race of her life, and Maria Sun ran her personal best of 5:59. In the men's mile, Ethan Crain and Eric Spayde ran razor close at the finish line to register 4:18.68 and 4:18.80 to top the club list. John Blouin ran razor close, too, with 4:24.00, and Ben Pease a close shave 0.88 behind him. Mike Decoste ran 4:50.11, Coach Tom Derderian missed his goal of sub-5:00 by 01.84, and Brad Stayton ran 5:20.25. Laura Mahoney sprinted 200 meters in 28.07. Ted Bowen ran 2:09.12 in the 800 with new member Brad Stayton in 2:24.07. In the much anticipated 3000 meter attack on 9:00, Arnold Seto dipped under the standard with an 8:57.14, Jim Reardon ran a season best of 9:01.92, and Jim Pawlicki demonstrated that he is back to full health with a 9:11.55.

+ GBTC won the USATF New England men's indoor track championship for the second year in a row at the Alden Invitational at Brown University on February 7 (see men's and women's results). Deon Barrett won the 5,000 meter race, and Jim Pawlicki took fourth. Jim Reardon took fourth in the 3,000 meter standing overall by winning the unseeded section with a faster time than all but four runners in the afternoon seeded section, in which Mark Reeder took second place. The distance medley team won their race with legs of 1200 by John Blouin, 400 by Terry O'Neill, 800 by Ben Pease, and mile by Mark Reeder. The women's distance medley team of Christina Manolatou, Laura Mahoney, Maria Sun, and Livvy Williams placed first among the women's open teams, but behind Holy Cross. Moeen Cheema placeing third in the triple jump, but first open, and Brian Woodbury jumped a personal best in the long jump with 21'4". New member Sean Ballou ran 400 meters in 52.72. Christina Manolatou ran her first mile track race in 5:37.74. Julie Spolidoro ran 3,000 meters in 10:27:33 to place first New England open runner in second place behind a New York woman. Maria Sun ran her second 800 meters of the day in the open 800 posting a 2:41.86. The relay team of Mike Leding, Sean Ballou, Terry O'Neill, and Jim Reardon ran a respectable relay in the thick of things. The 4x800 relay team of distance runners Barrett, Pawlicki, Reardon, and Blouin stood by to race, but the club had wrapped up the win by then, so they just warmed down.

+ The club's own Jesse Darley won the Stew Chase 15K in 50:22 on January 30, actually tying for first place with John Barbour, a recent USATF New England masters champion and the Greater Lowell Road Runners head coach. Other top finishers from the club include Jim Pawlicki (fifth), Jim Reardon (sixth), and Rob Macdonald (ninth). Be sure to see the full results, including a good picture of the two winners.

+ At the BU Terrier Classic on January 31, the club began its drive to put together a team for the distance medley at the USATF National Indoor Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 26-27. The distance medley is a relay race consisting of 1200, 400, 800, and 1600 meter legs. The qualifying standards are very strict. A men's team would need 10:10 to qualify, which would require times like 3:15, 0:50, 1:55, and 4:10, which isn't easy. At the Terrier Classic, Erik Spayde, Dave Cahill, Ben Pease, and John Blouin ran 1200, 400, 800, and 1600 meters in 3:09, 49.78, 1:55, and 4:46 for a time of 10:21. Just eleven seconds to go! Ethan Crain, our original miler on the team, has a 4:12 within his grasp, but developed a hamstring problem. John Blouin, our back-up miler, had run 4:27 in the mile just before his heroic 4:26 mile in the relay the next day. With a healthy Ethan or a fresh John, those eleven seconds could melt away. We will have one more shot on February 13 at the BU Saint Valentine's Invitational. Watch this space.

+ Russ Miller has announced the rules for the club's road race Grand Prix competition this season. As the road race season progresses, you can see the current standings by clicking on "our races" on the left of this page and then clicking on "road race season."

+ The club started the indoor track season with strong performances at the Harvard Invitational on December 12, our masters sprinters did well up at the Dartmouth Relays on January 9, club members put in almost 50 performances at the GBTC Invitational on January 24, and our elite runners ran at the BU Terrier Classic on January 30. In addition, club members have put in almost 95 performances in the first six meets in the Boston University developmental indoor track series, probably more than any other club in the region. The series is becoming the Fresh Pond of indoor track: for a ten-dollar entrance fee, it consists of an open 3000 meter race at 10am and an open mile race at 11am each Saturday morning at the old armory on the BU campus. Be sure to see the results posted on our indoor track page hanging off our race page, and read an amusing article about the series from Cool Running.

+ The club held its annual holiday party at the Muddy Charles Pub on December 13. Nearly seventy people attended the party. The food was Cajun cuisine provided by Dixie Kitchen, and the desserts were sweet cuisine provided by club members. The club receives ten numbers for the Boston Marathon each year, and one of the highlights of the annual party is the raffle awarding these numbers to club members. Seven numbers were awarded for club service to Melinda Casey, Moulay Essakalli, Chris Hussey, Hugh Jessup, Russ Miller, Frank Monkiewicz, and Sean Mullan. Three numbers were awarded in the raffle to Eric Deetz, Laurie Knapp, and Ken Ross. Good luck, runners! And thanks to Erin Cullinane and Melinda Casey for organizing another great party!

The women's team was also well-represented by great runs by Livvy Williams (74th place) and Tracey Timmins (84), but did not have enough members to appear in the official team standings. Coach Tom Derderian even ran in the master's race. Check out the full results for the men's race and the women's race.

+ GBTC men and women won the 1998 USATF New England Cross-Country Grand Prix by placing 4th and 6th in the New England Cross-Country Championships at Franklin Park on November 15. The club's team of Shawna Nehiley, Payal Parekh, and Cynthia Hastings won this women's Grand Prix event. On the same day, the club's team of Jesse Darley, Ben Nephew, Deon Barrett, Jim Pawlicki, and Erik Spayde traveled north to Medford to place a close second to Greater Lowell at the men's Grand Prix event.

Coach Tom Derderian says, "I am excited about the GBTC team going to nationals. The boyz ran a couple of awesome workouts this week. They ran ten times a mile on the Franklin Park course and some uneven paced fast 800s on the MIT indoor track. I am impressed. After 15 years, GBTC is back on the national scene. The men's team will be Deon Barrett, John Blouin, Ethan Crain, Jesse Darley, Ben Nephew, Jim Pawlikci, and Mark Reeder. The women's team will be Tracey Timmins and Livvy Williams.
