25th Anniversary Party
Mount Auburn Club
September 12, 1998
Left: Club president Gary Snyder (left) with founding Coach Bill Squires (right). Coach Squires organized the club at Boston College in 1973 for the purpose of training a small group of elite athletes, and proceeded to lead the club through some of its most glorious years of running. There is an interesting description of his own running and his coaching at the end of a Runner’s World article on the evolution of training systems.
Right: Coach Tom Derderian, along with Coach Ron Glennon (not pictured), continues the club tradition of vigorous competition, developing teams that routinely place in the top half dozen places in New England events. His personal accomplishments include running the Olympic trials twice, a 2:19 Boston marathon, and a vibrant, award-winning book on the history of the Boston Marathon. (Photos by Frank Monkiewicz.)
Jon Berit (center) coached the men’s team for many years until the duties of fatherhood took over, and now effectively serves as the club statistician. Jon stands here with Mike Turmala and Sandy Miller modeling new club accessories. The three of them have been with the club longer than nearly any other club member. (Photo by Frank Monkiewicz.)
Left: Bill Durette, here with his wife Pat, was for many years the much-admired coach of the women’s team, whose coaching combined a relaxed style with the ability to get results. Bill was a 4:15 miler in college, and most recently ran a Galloway-based marathon training program for club members.
Right: Our hostesses with the mostest, Susan Richards and Melinda Casey, spent long and thankless hours producing this grand anniversary party, so let us thank them now. These two have added social elegance to the club’s tradition of running success. (Photos by Frank Monkiewicz.)
Speed demons Jim Pawlicki (with Kristen Kozlosky) and Tom Cotter (with his wife). These may be the only pictures of these two men that do not show them in motion. (Photos by Frank Monkiewicz.)
Here we have most of the club’s master’s team: Frank Monkiewicz, Bob Ward, and Hugh Jessup will run any distance at the drop of a hat, with a long tradition of marathons. Standing next to them are Marie Jessup, Anna Eisengrat, and Amy Monkiewicz. (Photo by Frank Monkiewicz.)
Mike Wyatt, Carmen Danforth, and Michelle Parks having a good time. Carmen finished the Cape Ann 25K the Monday prior to this party, and Michelle was named an IronRunner in 1997 by the USATF-NE along with others including Hugh Jessup and Jim Pawlicki pictured elsewhere on this page. Left: Erin Cullinane, here with Hunt Lacascia, is our newsletter editor and runs her own literary e-zine called “The Bridge.”
Right: Sprinter Ted Bowen and his guest, Adriene Krefetz, relax before dinner. Ted had earned the right to relax, since he ran his team’s anchor leg in the Euro-style 3x3K cross-country relay in Franklin Park just hours before the party. (Photos by Frank Monkiewicz.)
Bob Ward, Judy Romvos and her husband Rick Jones, and Dotty Fine before dinner. Dotty is also a consistent member of the master’s team, a team that has won the Lake Winnipesaukee relay master’s division for several years in a row. (Photo by Frank Monkiewicz.)
New member Nasser Sharara, board member Moulay Essakalli and his guest, Jessica Bassett, and club president Gary Snyder at the bar. This is obviously the corner of power in more than one sense: Nasser Sharara also ran an anchor leg in the Euro-style 3x3K cross-country relay before the party, but he did that the day after completing a 26-mile training run! Speedsters Jesse Darley and Jim Reardon with their guests, Eliza Waters and Chris Tovee. Jesse returned from a scientific expedition to Mount Everest, and a month later placed sixth overall in the hot-and-hilly Cape Ann 25K. Jim Reardon is one of the club’s new centurions, having recently run up a 100-mile week just to show that he could do it. (Photo by Frank Monkiewicz.)
Mark Tuttle and Melinda Casey running the raffle after dinner. (Photos by Frank Monkiewicz.)
Let the dancing begin. Joanna Veltri and Maria Sun, two consistent runners, were members of the team that placed sixth at the USATF National Championship Freihofer’s 5K in May. (Photos by Frank Monkiewicz.)
And now the cake. Let’s all stick around for the next 25 years. (Photo by Frank Monkiewicz.)
We also have pictures from other club events.
