USATF New England half marathon championship
Melrose, Massachusetts
March 14, 1999
results
This race might have had the most exciting finish to
a New England distance race in a long time, especially since the
club's own Jesse Darley nearly won the race. Jesse had the lead at
mile 13, shadowed closely by Jack Dwyer (CMS), Rusty Snow (CMS), and
Pete Hammer (BRC). Jesse kicked, but so did the shadows. After over an
hour of racing, the four runners sprinted in the proximity of
elbows. Dwyer, Hammer, and Snow nailed Jesse on the back stretch. All
four runners sprinted together in the final 100 meters on the high
school track in front of stands filled with cheering people and a
blaring PA system. It looked and sounded like an Olympic final.

Most of the open men's team carousing after the race: Arnold
Seto (856), Jim Pawlicki (1831), Cam Dauler (1876, black cap), Mark
Reeder (1473, blue jacket), Deon Barrett (1611), Ben Nephew (1506),
Jesse Darley (1439), and Greg Putnam (777). (Photo by

Most of the distance runners in the club raced, and
most of the sprinters handed out water at the first water
stop. Here Ben Nephew (1506) passes up the chance to grab water out of
the hands of his teammate John Blouin (gray shirt). Cynthia
Hastings and Jim Reardon hold the club banner, while Hattie Hastings Derderian
peers over the top to watch the race. (Photo by Tom Derderian.)
Deon Barrett (1611) ran the race of his life,
ticking off 5:21 miles and reversing club positions with Arnold
Seto (856). (Photo by Tom Derderian.)

Greg Putnam (777) passes the club's water stop in
the half marathon. Whirlaway runner Doug Hartyn (2207) grabs an empty
cup of water. Our sprinters are obviously better at passing
batons than water cups. Sorry about that Doug. We'll do
better next time. (Photo by Tom Derderian.)
Cornell graduate Cam Dauler (1876) has been training
hard with the boyz and showed his new prowess at the race. Sage Green
(1829) returned to action, and here she runs the lap around the high
school track to the finish line, finishing in second place on our open
women's team. (Photo by Tom Derderian.)

Christina Manolatou (566) led our open women's team
to a ninth place finish, duking it out here on the lap to the finish
line with Whirlaway runner Maggi Murray (1540). (Photo by Tom
Derderian.)

The entire water stop crew: Alyssa Duffy, Steve
Foraste (red cap), Kristen Kozlosky, Susan Wiseman (face hidden behind
Kristen), Dave Cahill, Cynthia Hastings, Calvin Williams, John Blouin,
Mark Tuttle, Mike Leding, Steve Luchacko, Laura Mahoney, and Tai
Man. Hattie and Jane Derderian stand on either side of the club
banner. They model the latest in trendy fashions. (Photo by Tom Derderian.)
