GBTC Wins 4 on Windy Island

Emily Raymond, File photo by GreaterSnap

The wind blew across the island of Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Cape Cod. Usually this island is an hospitable summer vacation spot, but not today. GBTC’s Jon Chesto ran for second, well behind the accomplished Paul Ryan of the BAA, so Chesto fought alone into wind in the quiet forest and struggled to keep his racing focus. A runner passed him in the last miles, but Chesto easily won his age group.

Chesto won the 40+, Gary Cattarin won the 45+, and Ken Ross won the 50+.

But the big news is that Emily Raymond, a long-time GBTC member from Ohio and Brigham Young University, won the women’s race by three minutes. She is preparing for the Boston Marathon as are many other club runners. See this article for today’s photo.

Valentine at BU

They said they came to break the club record. But it didn’t look good when David Kennedy, who had recently broken the club record for 400 m, developed a hamstring problem in his open 400 m. Coach Callum had a replacement from the “B” team. Warren Lane ran the first leg in revenge for what he thought was a poor 500 m race earlier in the day and handed off to Christian Tirella, then to Jon Hall who wore the GBTC shirt for the first time, and at last to Alex Engle (whose record Kennedy broke). They got the record by a whopping two seconds. 3:14:86.

Earlier in the day UMass grad, Dan Barry, in his second race in GBTC red, ran the mile in 4:09.85 in a meet that saw five sub-four minute miles. Barry placed 34th in a field of 244 milers. This meet was the place to be on the East Coast!

Ted Breen, also UMass grad, ran a personal best in the 3,000 m. Especially fun for GBTC fans was watching the battle in the mile among Haringa, Mendoza, and Lowe. Results are in the club performance list.

Two Records Fall

Devotia Moore said after smashing the GBTC record for 800 m on Friday that she’s been running so well ever since she started wearing the the club’s red uniform that she ought to staple it to herself. She blasted out with an opening 28s first lap to push to a National qualifier and 2012 US Olympic Trials “B” qualifier with her 2:04.64 winning time. That broke her club record of 2:07.09 recently set at the New Balance Invite in NYC on February 4. Jess Klett ran her personal best of 2:09.95. Kyle MacQueen took her turn later to smash the club record and personal best in the 3,000 m with a 9:32.50. Current club president Sara Donahue‘s record from 2009 of 9:48.20 fell.

On the roads Matt Haringa and Sam Jurek took first and second in the Great Stew Chase 15 km road race in Lynn, MA. full results will be on coolrunning: here. Four GBTC runners joined Haringa and Jurek in the early lead pack, Matt Lyons and Mat Weissinger. Jason Dunklee followed at a respectful distance.
