Meet directors Brennan Bonner and Matt Haringa did a great job directing their first XC race for the club. Club volunteers performed well. You can see how the runners performed in the links below. This event was such a success that we will do it again next year.

Record Broken: 4 qualify for Nats

GBTC Fans

The meet started with a song as GBTC member and Margaret Bradley Award winner Victoria Barnaby sang a beautiful rendition of the national anthem. She later placed third in the invitational mile with her personal best. Excellent performances continued the theme of the meet with David McCarthy of Providence College powering his way to a meet record in the 3000 meters running 7:56.76 to break the 1994 record held by Alan Culpepper of the University of Colorado at 8:01.2. Dan Serianni and Joan Dow qualified in the 3000 meter race walk for the indoor national championships to be held in Albuquerque, NM on Feb 26-27 as did Brian Hill of the Boston Athletic Association and Devotia Moore racing unattached in the 800 meters. Seventy-year-old Carl Wallin placed 9th in the open men’s weight throw and also won the masters shot put.

The host team’s athletes won many events: Dacia Taylor-Samuels, long jump; Jennifer Harlow, high jump; Kyle Williams, 60 meters dash; Amelia Landberg, 3000 meter Invitational; Jennifer Dagan, open 800; Tim Bayley, Invitational mile; Warren Lane, Invitational 200 meters; and Barry Phelps, Master’s mile.

Victoria Barnaby awarded the 2012 Margaret Bradley award

The Greater Boston Track Club is pleased to announce that Victoria Barnaby is the 2012 recipient of the annual Margaret Bradley award. Victoria Barnaby graduated from Boston University in 2009 with a BA in International Relations: Economics and Business and a minor in Spanish Literature. She currently works for PUMA International in Boston as the Digital Retail Marketing Manager.

Victoria began her running career participating in track and cross country for Newburyport High under Coach Donald Hennigar. In her freshman year of college she rowed for the Boston University women’s crew team, and later in 2006 she joined the Greater Boston Track Club. She has worked with GBTC coaches Tom Derderian and Dave Callum to experiment in a variety of events, including the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Since 2009 she has focused on improving her middle distance times and in 2011 ran the 3,000 steeplechase in a GBTC record time of 11:01. She recently completed her first cross-country season and this season plans to break 5 minutes for the mile and improve her steeplechase time even further.

Coach Tom Derderian says, “Victoria first came to us as a freshman at BU because the BU team would not accept her, since her high school mile time of 5:30 was not fast enough. She has since eclipsed that time and beaten many BU varsity runners on the track and in cross-country. Her success proves the adage ‘running well is the best revenge.’” For her award, Victoria has chosen to run the open 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2012 Penn Relays. This will be her first time competing at that track meet.
