New York Thriller
Meanwhile, GBTCers Guarascio (2:55:56), Romain (3:19:38), Allison Tables (ca. 1979, 3:39:09), Brian McNamara (ca. 1982, 2:39:16), and Matthew Biggart (ca. 1984, 2:48:54) punched their own tickets for an obscure local sporting tradition while contemplating when a future American might do similar justice to Miki Gorman's legacy along Lebow's five-borough course (her second victory was in 1977). Provisional results are now posted here. Celebrities including Ed Norton (3:48:01) were counted among the dead (who) start to walk in their masquerade.
And finally, bearing their combined funk of forty thousand years, longtime members Andy Rogovin (77th, 3:25:16) and John Blouin (12th, 3:05:43) qualified for the B.A.A. footrace at the Cape Cod and Mount Desert Island Marathons, in their own time. Results are here: CCM, MDI. [more...]

Women Win with Weightless Ease
Sara Donahue dressed for the rain in short black sleeves and black tights as the Nor'easter blew in off the ocean. She started slowly then flittered along like Peter Pan's shadow taking the women's lead in the last quarter of the race to win with weightless ease. She led her team to a New England Marathon Championship win and victory in the entire USATFNE Grand Prix road race series for 2009. Newly wed Tara Vance Wommack finished 7th among the women and Christy Bonstelle running her personal best placed 10th in the women's competition.
For the men's team in red, new-green card holder Tomoaki Uchiki ran like a Samurai in the rain fiercely running down the competition along the banks of the Merrimack River taking 19th in the race and second for the team. Jim Emord followed closely but the team leader for the day running personal best was Ryan Aschbrenner, his white hat a beacon to his teammates.
Going into today's race GBTC and BAA were tied for first. But the BAA team placed only seventh. The GBTC open men's team placed 4th behind first place Central Mass Striders so the score after this final 2009 USATFNE Grand Prix race adds up to a tie for first between GBTC and CMS with BAA third.
Giannis Papadopoulos took second in the half marathon in 1:11.

GBTC 2009 Boston Marathon Team
GBTC coach Tom Derderian announced the roster for the club's 2009 Boston Marathon Team. The teams will attempt to win the team prizes again. Last year's race provided great drama. The GBTC men ran ahead of the BAA by 12 seconds at 10 km, but the BAA team ran ahead by 19 seconds at the half, at 35 km the GBTC led by 1:34, then in the last miles the BAA burst ahead (or the GBTC team fell behind) for the GBTC team to finish 3rd, 2:18 behind the BAA. The women's team placed 7th last year.
The men's teams and women's team have each won in recent years. The GBTC teams are strong - the "gold standard" of three men at 2:30 and three women at 3:00 could happen.

The good Doctor's prognosis of the day:
"Despite what seemed like pretty lousy training on my part, Ryan K and I ran the first 20 or so together ... great even splits around 6:35 for the first ten then dropped to the mid 6:20s for about the next ten and I was around in the high 6:30s for the last 6 into a pretty strong headwind ... Certainly better than I expected."And finally, some photos by GreaterSnap:

Jim and Ryan A., teammates racing side by side, according to their carefully laid plan.

Dan and Ryan K. dialing in the pace.

Truth in advertising.

Sara floats along to a very good 1:25 in the half.

Ryan K. swore off gloves as he and Dan pushed the pace toward 6:20s.

Jane's heterochromic gloves must be part of the secret to her dipping under 3:06.
