USATF Club Nats: A wild, tightly fought race

Amelia Bishop ran a rut in the grass infield very late in the course of the men's race. She shuttled, shouted and cheered each runner, bellowing decibels that only a fit athlete's lungs could sustain. Passion like that echoed the rolling hills of Lexington, Kentucky during the USATF Club Nationals cross-country. Allison McCabe latched on to a rolling mass of her competitors fighting every inch of the way as places changed with nearly every stride. As a club championships the race had no freaks-of-nature professional runners nor any casual fitness runners. Nearly everyone ran for a team where every place counted. Unlike like the mellow miles of a road race, this fight felt like a kilometers-long rugby scrum. Allison's kick carried her to the finish two seconds ahead of four runners. All the club's top five finished in the same minute for the 6 km course. Six runners finished within two seconds of Gretchen Chick, and Jen Lee and Kyle MacQueen each had the company of six runners crossing the line in the same time!
In the men's race wild-haired Ryan Place set out in pursuit of a certain BAA runner, Brian Harvey, and worked his way up like a stealth hunter to within striking distance of his quarry. Ryan got Brian by 7 seconds. The secret fact is that BAA guys and GBTC guys often train together and actually like each other but won't admit it once the starting gun fires. Our team hampered by injury and circumstance lost three qualified runners before the start, but other team members rushed in and ran to the limit of their fitness. Brad Kozel had not expected to carry the burden of the fifth man, but hunched up his shoulders and ran his season's best cross-country race.
