Women Win with Weightless Ease

Sara Donahue in the 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon. Photo by GreaterSnap

Sara Donahue dressed for the rain in short black sleeves and black tights as the Nor'easter blew in off the ocean. She started slowly then flittered along like Peter Pan's shadow taking the women's lead in the last quarter of the race to win with weightless ease. She led her team to a New England Marathon Championship win and victory in the entire USATFNE Grand Prix road race series for 2009. Newly wed Tara Vance Wommack finished 7th among the women and Christy Bonstelle running her personal best placed 10th in the women's competition.

For the men's team in red, new-green card holder Tomoaki Uchiki ran like a Samurai in the rain fiercely running down the competition along the banks of the Merrimack River taking 19th in the race and second for the team. Jim Emord followed closely but the team leader for the day running personal best was Ryan Aschbrenner, his white hat a beacon to his teammates.

Going into today's race GBTC and BAA were tied for first. But the BAA team placed only seventh. The GBTC open men's team placed 4th behind first place Central Mass Striders so the score after this final 2009 USATFNE Grand Prix race adds up to a tie for first between GBTC and CMS with BAA third.

Giannis Papadopoulos took second in the half marathon in 1:11.

Women win at Lone Gull

Most of the women's team, post-race at Gloucester
In near perfect running conditions on a gently undulating and scenic course, the GBTC women's team extended their lead in the USATF-NE Grand Prix, winning the 10k event at Gloucester. Gretchen Chick led the team with a 6th place finish. Meanwhile, the men's team placed 6th in a tightly contested competition, their aggregate time only 2 seconds behind rivals CMS. That score leaves them tied with BAA for first in the overall Grand Prix scoring, with just the marathon remaining.

Coach Tom Derderian made a welcome return to racing after a summer of injury.

Teams lead Annual Grand Prix Series

The Battle begins in the rain and wind.

Two races remain in the New England USATF Grand Prix after today's race. Both GBTC teams extended their leads at the Ollie 5-Miler. The men lead by four points and the women by three points. The BAA won both races but the newly formed adidas team beat the GBTC men by nine seconds.

The course that was supposed to be five miles turned out to be short. The GPS jockeys concurred with each other that it is only 4.93 miles. It seems that workers placed the cones at the turn-around in the wrong place.

Teams burst to top of 2009 USATF Grand Prix

MacQueen, McCabe, Lynch, Lee, Kelly, Ovanin, Chick, and Vance. Photo by GreaterSnap

Lincoln, RI—Prior to today's USATF Grand Prix Championship the Central Mass Striders men's team tied the GBTC men for first place in the year-long series. CMS also led the GBTC women's team by a point. Today the men's team placed third but two team places ahead of CMS in the 18 team field. That thrust them into the lead.

The GBTC women placed second team behind the Boston Athletic Association that won both races, but three places ahead of series leading CMS. So both GBTC teams now lead the series. The men's team has won the series but the women's team never has.

In the women's race Bradley award winning runner, Meghan Lynch, ran the best race of her life (so far) to take 5th place.

Smith, Wommack, Haringa, McCabe, and Lee all ran in the NB Twilight meet the night before.

More photos are available on Flickr, full results are here, and GBTC Results are below.
