USATFNE Road Race Grand Prix 2010 kicks off in Amherst, MA

Funny how events slap the face of prediction. I thought our GBTC women's open team would have a tough time. Amelia had a leg muscle problem, Kyle had a back of the knee problem, Meghan had a new job that required travel, but they finished second team as I had hoped, but feared would not happen. But I expected we had a stronger men's team than we had last year with Ryan Place, Nate Freese, and Ted Breen hot off track 3km times of 8:22, 823, 8:35. But "stuff" happens. Ryan developed a sudden muscle problem and could not start, Nate had a hamstring that removed him from the race after running several miles with the leaders. Ted had a problem that removed him from the course for a brief, but critical time. But other guys rose up and prevented a disaster. Eric Mendoza ran his best race of the year to secure the team's back as fifth man while David Bedoya placed 6th overall. The team placed in the money, in third.
The club's second five men if they could be scored would finish in 7th place. The team's depth saved them.

Today Allison McCabe qualified for the 2010 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships by winning the 1500 meters in the New England Indoor Track & Field Championship. Her next race is at 4:25 PM on Sunday, February 28th at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The biggest and best Valentine

Kat Warden leading the 800 meters. She finished 5th in 2:09.64.

This Valentine meet at Boston University may be the biggest, best indoor track meet in the country. Forty-three sections, 199 men,158 women in 32 sections, ran 200 meters. The starter fired his pistol over three hundred times. The arena sounded like a war zone. Six sections ran in the men's 5,000. Two hundred and three men raced the mile. The final Friday night women's 5,000 meter ended at 11:20 pm! Too many GBTC athletes competed to list all here, but full results can be found here.

I'll list only our top finishers: Tahari James won the triple jump and placed 4th in the long jump behind Casey Taylor. Rich Harrison took third in the shot put and Ryan Place raced to 4th in the 5,000. Hafiz Greigre took 5th in the 200, fifth places also for Allison McCabe in the 1000 and for Kat Warden in the 800 marking her debut in GBTC colors.

The New England Championships at Harvard next Sunday will mark the general end of the indoor season.

The Great Stew Chase 15 km in Lynn, MA

Race winner Crystal Anthony and runner up Kyle MacQueen of GBTC

The wind blew at 20°F into the faces of the runners for the first half of this hilly traditional Boston Preparation road race. GBTC's distance runners, mostly those who have not been concentrating on indoor track, raced and dominated the field on a day cruel to fast racing.

Chick is Set for Chicago Shamrock Shuffle

The Kennebeck Journal recently profiled GBTC's Gretchen Chick, the 2010 recipient of the annual Margaret Bradley Award, as she prepares to race the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K in Chicago on March 21st. We're excited that a recipient will return to the Second City, especially on the heels of The University of Chicago's 3rd edition of their Margaret Bradley Invitational on February 19-20.
