BU Mini # 2: Pierre-Louis returns

Josette Pierre-Louis returned to club action in the second meet of this three-meet development series with an excellent 25.25 200 meters. Doug Chick made a valiant attempt to win the mile by storming to the front to stun an experienced field. When the field woke up they reeled him in with a vengeance.

Alyssa Brigham shows she is returning to form and will be a force in the indoor season.

Full results are here, and GBTC results are below.

Michael Connors provided this video of Doug Chick, David Bedoya and Dan Smith in the mile.

USATF Club Nats: A wild, tightly fought race

Where's Harvey? Ryan Place checks on his competition.

Chick in the thick: they battled like a Kilometers-long rugby scrum.
photos by Greater Snap

Amelia Bishop ran a rut in the grass infield very late in the course of the men's race. She shuttled, shouted and cheered each runner, bellowing decibels that only a fit athlete's lungs could sustain. Passion like that echoed the rolling hills of Lexington, Kentucky during the USATF Club Nationals cross-country. Allison McCabe latched on to a rolling mass of her competitors fighting every inch of the way as places changed with nearly every stride. As a club championships the race had no freaks-of-nature professional runners nor any casual fitness runners. Nearly everyone ran for a team where every place counted. Unlike like the mellow miles of a road race, this fight felt like a kilometers-long rugby scrum. Allison's kick carried her to the finish two seconds ahead of four runners. All the club's top five finished in the same minute for the 6 km course. Six runners finished within two seconds of Gretchen Chick, and Jen Lee and Kyle MacQueen each had the company of six runners crossing the line in the same time!

In the men's race wild-haired Ryan Place set out in pursuit of a certain BAA runner, Brian Harvey, and worked his way up like a stealth hunter to within striking distance of his quarry. Ryan got Brian by 7 seconds. The secret fact is that BAA guys and GBTC guys often train together and actually like each other but won't admit it once the starting gun fires. Our team hampered by injury and circumstance lost three qualified runners before the start, but other team members rushed in and ran to the limit of their fitness. Brad Kozel had not expected to carry the burden of the fifth man, but hunched up his shoulders and ran his season's best cross-country race.

New Nutrition Editions

Sports nutritionist, marathoner, and longstanding GBTC club member Nancy Clark RD recently published the fourth edition of "Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook" (April 2008) and a first edition of "Getting it Right From the Start!" (March 2009). Both volumes are filled with helpful food tips as well as colorful photos, tailored to both the veteran and novice athlete. All of Clark's many works offer tremendous value, especially when purchased as a pair (discounts!) and presented as thoughtful gifts to the athletes you love.

Nancy has been instrumental in helping athletes not just eat, but eat right and enjoy the benefits of better performance and health. In these practical nutrition resources, Clark combines her personal experiences and professional expertise to teach novice athletes how to eat well and enhance their energy. They learn what, when, and how to eat so they can enjoy not only the process of training but also competition itself with energy to spare. This book is written from Clark’s passion for teaching everyday champions how to use food to help them achieve their goals.

Nancy will host several nutrition workshops this winter in Baltimore (1/15-16), New York City (3/5-6), and for online home study.

National Club XC History

I want to update an earlier summary of how our teams have fared in this modern era of the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships.

The good news is that for the first time, GBTC's women have stepped up to finishing in the top half of all scoring teams. Another promising trend is the fields have grown to comprise more than 25 teams of open women and 40 teams of open men, ensuring stiff competition. But it's also pretty clear that GBTC still has a lot of work to do on the bluegrass to match what it has done admirably on the track.

Flash Results: Club Nats on Bluegrass

This is a first look at the 2009 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships in Lexington, KY. Mares raced a course of 30 furlongs, while Stallions covered 50. GBTC's women placed 14th of 29 teams, while the men finished 31st out of 42 teams. Today's team leaders were Allison McCabe and Ryan Place.

When Coach Tom was interviewed about the women's race, he insisted "today's girls' performance was the best XC nationals performance ever." The spread among our top five women was a very brief 41 seconds.

Later, over a sumptuous post-race dinner of saffron risotto and a nice chianti, Jennifer Lee confessed that part of her motivation to race so damn hard was to represent her teammates who are specifically excluded from these XC Championships by virtue of lacking U.S. citizenship. "We ran for the immigrants. ;)", she texted and emoticoned. GBTC disagrees with using citizenship as an eligibility requirement for this event, and would like for the policy to be abolished.

Pak Pilgrimage to New Zealand

Mission accomplished! Pak stands upright, downunder with Pfitzinger.

I sent Junyong Pak on a mission (not at club expense) to deliver a GBTC racing shirt to an old-time accomplished GBTC runner who now lives there.
Peter Pfitzinger represented the United States in the Los Angeles Olympics (11th) and the 1988 Seoul Olympics (14th). Pfitzinger wrote "Advanced Marathoning" a very useful book.
He ran for GBTC in the early 1980s and lived in Boston and Wellesley. He was one of my regular training partners in those days. Pak will be racing with the club teams in Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday.
