GBTC Awards Announced at Annual Meeting

A number of awards were presented to members of the club at the annual meeting of GBTC on Tuesday, October 27. First, the Margaret Bradley award winner was announced. This award, presented annually to a female member of GBTC who performs at a high level and embodies the enthusiasm and team spirit of Margaret, was awarded this year to Gretchen Chick. Gretchen has represented the club strongly in track, cross-country and road racing, and will receive travel support to a race of her choosing within the U.S. in the next 12 months.

Coaches Tom Derderian and Dave Callum also presented their coaches awards. These awards typically recognize those who have gone the extra mile (literally) for the club, shown exceptional team spirit, improved their performances over short or long time periods, or all of the above. Tiana Riel was recognized by coach Callum for her extraordinary contributions at Club Track & Field Nationals, in which she competed in four individual events and two relays, contributing substantially to the narrow victory by the GBTC women. Francis Shen was the recipient of Callum's other award for his many years of leadership of the hurdle squad, which is well evidenced in this legendary urban hurdling video.

On the distance side, Coach Derderian gave his male award to Dan Smith, who in two years with the club has gone from out-of-shape to PR shape, his 14:51 for 5k leading the men's list in 2009. Christy Bonstelle received the women's distance award with PRs at the half and full marathon that helped carry the women's team to the overall victory in the USATF-NE Grand Prix. She was also a member of the 4th-placed team at the Boston marathon.

Mayor's Cup Toughest Competition Ever!

Jen Lee sprints to the finish flanked by competition. GreaterSnap photo

Teams and runners poured into Franklin Park today from everywhere: Riadha (means athletics in Swahili) from New York City, Westchester TC, Genesee Valley, Syracuse, Pennsylvania, and Maryland as well as the usual Boston clubs to race the 20th Mayor's Cup annual cross country championships. GBTC women's open team took 5th and the men took 7th. Allison McCabe again let the women's team as she has been doing in road races and track meets, Amelia Bishop and Gretchen Chick finished very close behind her. Mud, puddles , and squishy ground from the night's torrential rains slowed race times.

In the men's race Ryan Place, less fit than he has been because of an injury, led the team with Nate Freese and Dan Smith in support. As evidenced from the results below GBTC ran with numbers and quality.

Perhaps the news of the day is the resurgence of the club's men's master's team. Out of 20 men's teams the GBTC masters placed 4th. The masters team should be formidable in the New England Masters's Championships on Nov 8th over 8 km in Franklin Park.

Women Win with Weightless Ease

Sara Donahue in the 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon. Photo by GreaterSnap

Sara Donahue dressed for the rain in short black sleeves and black tights as the Nor'easter blew in off the ocean. She started slowly then flittered along like Peter Pan's shadow taking the women's lead in the last quarter of the race to win with weightless ease. She led her team to a New England Marathon Championship win and victory in the entire USATFNE Grand Prix road race series for 2009. Newly wed Tara Vance Wommack finished 7th among the women and Christy Bonstelle running her personal best placed 10th in the women's competition.

For the men's team in red, new-green card holder Tomoaki Uchiki ran like a Samurai in the rain fiercely running down the competition along the banks of the Merrimack River taking 19th in the race and second for the team. Jim Emord followed closely but the team leader for the day running personal best was Ryan Aschbrenner, his white hat a beacon to his teammates.

Going into today's race GBTC and BAA were tied for first. But the BAA team placed only seventh. The GBTC open men's team placed 4th behind first place Central Mass Striders so the score after this final 2009 USATFNE Grand Prix race adds up to a tie for first between GBTC and CMS with BAA third.

Giannis Papadopoulos took second in the half marathon in 1:11.

Two new club members, Merry Placer and Sarah Milby, joined Tara Wommack who ran (as Vance) on last year's fifth place team. Placer ran at Wake Forest and Milby played soccer for Yale. Wommack will race in NE Grand Prix final road race, the Bay State Marathon next Sunday, Oct 18th. The team currently leads the year's standings. She will be joined by Olympic Trials qualifier, Sarah Donahue, Christy Bonstelle, and Kelley Aschbrenner.

Shoemaker loses shoe and Anderson wins as easy as pie at the Topsfield XC

Jarrod Shoemaker's old spike shoes failed him with the plate breaking around a spike so every step painfully drove it up into his foot. He found it less painful to rip off the shoe and run the last half mile with a bare foot.
photos by GreaterSnap

The Greater Boston Track Club and its partners, Puma, and Darn Tough Socks, offered prizes of fresh-baked pies for the top 13 women and men in each race, a dozen pair of socks for each race and a total of $2,000 in prize money to the top five teams in each race. Fortunately for the club treasury the home team won both races. But the women's team from the Philadelphia Track Club won $300 for second place and three pies that they report did not survive the ride back to the City of Sisterly Love.

The GBTC's intention in hosting this race is to boost the quality and frequency of post-college team cross-country competition in New England and increase the number of club teams in the New England USATF Cross-country Grand Prix.

In the women's race Clair Duncan of the Philly TC took an early lead but Riadha's Kristin Anderson hung back waiting. Later she took a small lead and seemed to hold it with ease as she smiled her way across the finish. Merry Placer who has moved to Boston after completing her degrees and racing for Wake Forest took third. In the men's race GBTC's Ryan Place took off after last year's winner Jarrod Shoemaker over the tough, hilly and at times muddy course in Bradley-Palmer State Park. The course loops up over the crest of Moon Hill, a lovely field atop a cruel hill in the middle of an autumnal forest, then swoops down over some slick mud in a dark woods. BAA's Matt Carter and GBTC's Dan Smith agonizingly sprinted the last meters to finish in the same second.
