Tomoaki Goes Bonk At Nahant 30 km

Tomoaki Uchiki leading the leaders at 11 miles by the sea approaching Forty Steps Beach in Nahant. He would hang with these guys, eventual winner Jim Johnson of CMS and runner up Martin Tighe, until 17 miles.

The leaders started slowly in Nahant, MA for 30 kilometers of racing on a hilly, twisty course on this peninsular town on a morning spitting rain off the sea. GBTC's Tomoaki Uchiki planned to race at 6:05-6:10 pace, but the first few miles in the lead pack at 6:15s felt soooo comfortable. Then the leaders picked up the pace. Tomoaki could not pass up a good race so he stuck with them as the pace dipped below 5:50. He knew he would pay. At 17 miles he still ran with the leaders. Suddenly he could no longer race and staggered to the line long after his pace makers finished.

Allison Tables ran in 7th place among the women on this course that is not fast, but beautiful.

Women win at Lone Gull

Most of the women's team, post-race at Gloucester
In near perfect running conditions on a gently undulating and scenic course, the GBTC women's team extended their lead in the USATF-NE Grand Prix, winning the 10k event at Gloucester. Gretchen Chick led the team with a 6th place finish. Meanwhile, the men's team placed 6th in a tightly contested competition, their aggregate time only 2 seconds behind rivals CMS. That score leaves them tied with BAA for first in the overall Grand Prix scoring, with just the marathon remaining.

Coach Tom Derderian made a welcome return to racing after a summer of injury.

Teams lead Annual Grand Prix Series

The Battle begins in the rain and wind.

Two races remain in the New England USATF Grand Prix after today's race. Both GBTC teams extended their leads at the Ollie 5-Miler. The men lead by four points and the women by three points. The BAA won both races but the newly formed adidas team beat the GBTC men by nine seconds.

The course that was supposed to be five miles turned out to be short. The GPS jockeys concurred with each other that it is only 4.93 miles. It seems that workers placed the cones at the turn-around in the wrong place.

GBTC dominant around Cape Ann

Tomoaki, Ted Breen, and Jon Chesto in a tight pack early in the race. Photo by Sara Donohue

The red jerseys of GBTC were very much in evidence at the 76th annual Around Cape Ann 25k. Ryan Aschbrenner, seeking to improve on last year's 3rd place, went off quickly to the lead, chased by CRC's Hank Scollard, while a pack of four more GBTC men followed closely by Tara Wommack gave GBTC the lion's share of the top 10. While the hills of the Cape Ann course are not to be underestimated, the weather this year was about as good as could be arranged on a Labor Day Monday, with relatively low temperatures and humidity.

In the end, Ryan was able to move decisively away from Scollard for the win, while Tara was never challenged in a gun-to-tape victory. The men's team, with 5 finishers in the top 7, were easy winners of the team prize, while the ladies were just beaten into second place by Somerville.
