A Lifetime in the Making

Jon Korhonen, a grad of UMass-Amherst, and current grad student at Harvard, ran the fastest mile for GBTC since 1983. He will race the anchor leg, 1600, in the Distance Medley Relay at the National Indoors meet at Reggie Lewis on Sunday, March 1, 2009.

The club scribed 45 performances at the 2009 USATF New England Indoor Championship at Harvard University. Topping the list was Jon Korhonen's impressive win in the men's mile with a 4:11.92. This is the fastest mile performance by anyone on GBTC since Bill Okerman's 4:03.9, at the second GBTC Invitational on February 6, 1983, twenty days before Korhonen was born. Wins were also achieved by Joseph Brennan in 400m, Hafiz Greigre in 200m, Rich Harrison in SP, Sherita Williams in TJ, Jennifer Hawkes in HJ, and the men's Men 4x440 Yard Relay. Josette Pierre-Louis crushed the club record for 400m with her 56.47.

Freitas, Schiller court success at Valentine

Brian Freitas blazed to 1:03.66 for 2nd overall in the 500m at the annual Valentine meet at Boston University today. His great performance topples an eleven year old club record previously held by Kevin Russell. And Matt Schiller won the hearts and minds of track fans with his 1:56.38 for 38th in the 800m, a huge personal best that drew audible gasps as Matt accelerated past five competitors on the outside of the final banked turn.  In all, the GBTC men registered 28 performances for what can only be called a labor of love.
