Shoemaker loses shoe and Anderson wins as easy as pie at the Topsfield XC

Jarrod Shoemaker's old spike shoes failed him with the plate breaking around a spike so every step painfully drove it up into his foot. He found it less painful to rip off the shoe and run the last half mile with a bare foot.

The Greater Boston Track Club and its partners, Puma, and Darn Tough Socks, offered prizes of fresh-baked pies for the top 13 women and men in each race, a dozen pair of socks for each race and a total of $2,000 in prize money to the top five teams in each race. Fortunately for the club treasury the home team won both races. But the women's team from the Philadelphia Track Club won $300 for second place and three pies that they report did not survive the ride back to the City of Sisterly Love.

The GBTC's intention in hosting this race is to boost the quality and frequency of post-college team cross-country competition in New England and increase the number of club teams in the New England USATF Cross-country Grand Prix.

In the women's race Clair Duncan of the Philly TC took an early lead but Riadha's Kristin Anderson hung back waiting. Later she took a small lead and seemed to hold it with ease as she smiled her way across the finish. Merry Placer who has moved to Boston after completing her degrees and racing for Wake Forest took third. In the men's race GBTC's Ryan Place took off after last year's winner Jarrod Shoemaker over the tough, hilly and at times muddy course in Bradley-Palmer State Park. The course loops up over the crest of Moon Hill, a lovely field atop a cruel hill in the middle of an autumnal forest, then swoops down over some slick mud in a dark woods. BAA's Matt Carter and GBTC's Dan Smith agonizingly sprinted the last meters to finish in the same second.

Kristin Anderson shovels in her well-earned Strawberry-rhubarb pie surrounded by her Riadha teammates. Liz Grudzinski smiles and Dennis Wolff looms over the proceedings.
