Cross-country runners survive sub-zero wind chill

Start of the women's race into the teeth of the wind.

The cold front blew down from Canada at 22 degrees F, carrying blowing snow into the faces of GBTC runners in the USATF National Club XC Championships at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane, Washington. The women’s team placed 13th, led by Sara Donohue. The men were led by Jim Emord.

Gretchen Chick, too cold to smile.

The conditions were the most extreme in the history of this meet. Sara Donahue fell and banged her head on some ice, leaving a noticeable lump. Junyong Pak’s eyelashes froze together so he couldn’t blink. Gretchen Chick tried to smile for photos, but her face was too cold. The running didn’t stop when the race ended, because everybody rushed back to the vans to escape the sub-zero wind chill. The team is looking forward to indoor track. Come to the holiday party to hear more tales.

Results will be available at the race website.
