Super Sherita

Sherita Williams advanced one place on Sunday afternoon in the Triple Jump finals at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Finishing in 9th place with a mark of 13.29m (43-07.25), Sherita was only marginally off of her newly minted personal best of 13.52m. We're very proud of how she's proven that club athletes can indeed mix it up with the pros. Congratulations, Sherita!
Meanwhile, Track & Field broadcasting pioneer Toni Reavis writes on Monday in Runnerville about an old boys of GBTC family reunion out in Track Town USA. The boundaries of Greater Bostonia keep expanding!

Williams at 2008 US Olympic Team Trials

GBTC's own Sherita Williams survived the qualifying rounds of the Triple Jump tonight, with a new personal best of 44 feet 4.25 inches (13.52m) at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field in Eugene, Oregon. Sherita's outstanding performance, good for 10th place and advancing her to the finals held on Sunday, June 29th at 2:25 PM, also breaks her own club record. This is a BIG BIG deal; anything less than a new personal best could have kept her out of the finals. Results from Track Town U.S.A. will be updated continuously here, so stay tuned.

Alumni Remembrances

Several recent articles illustrate the long arm of GBTC's pedagogical influence throughout the world of track! Coaches Alan Milld (Dedham HS, MA), Alberto Salazar (Nike Oregon Project), and Bob Sevene (CSUMB and Olympian Blake Russell) each have experiences contributing to Greater Boston's storied past, notably under the tenure of coach Bill Squires. In time, those experiences as athletes and directors built quality coaches, who in turn foster new athletes on the regional, national, and Olympic levels. That cycle perpetuates even today in younger members Rod Hemingway and Christine Kliober, as they too mature into coaches for our sport.

Third Grand Prix of 2008, Lincoln, RI

The New England Grand Prix turns another page today, upon the sunbaked blacktop of Lincoln Greyhound Park, at the Rhody 5K. Tantalizingly close to the scenic oasis of Lincoln Woods SP, the revised course eschews shade, while deftly tracing the outline of a snail. All aesthetics aside, this race always fosters head-to-head competition among the very best, and helps friends to catch up while enjoying a burger, spiedie, or soda.

Men raced first this year, with women starting a half hour later, allowing each to cheer on their own better halves. The men, lead by Kibrom Temelso (15:28, 12th), placed fifth among 16 teams, with aggregate times for 2nd through 5th place teams spanning a mere 31 seconds (a spread of 1.5 seconds per runner!) Andrew Wommack ran noticeably stronger than even last week, closer to his dominating form in Hyannis. The women, lead by Allison McCabe (18:06, 9th), placed fifth among 11 teams, a mere 12.3 seconds behind fourth place CMS (or 2.5 seconds per runner). Katie Fobert also raced aggressively, similar to her banner day in Cohasset. Andrew Guida multiplied his typical race distance by 12.5 to race valiantly in the red; what a guy, what a club!

Neither squad was at its full strength, so things look promising on the roads and track in June and July. Full results are available for the dudes and dames; follow the link below for exclusively GBTC results.
