The masters men had an aggregate time 4 minutes ahead of the women, but placed only 35th in a competition that Bruce Davie called "ridiculously competitive".

Bradley Award winner, Amanda Parrish, ran a substantial PR of 3:19.

Sara Donahue ran a terrific race only a few minutes slower than her personal best and well below her next fastest time. She had had setbacks in training this winter so we are all pleased that she ran so well.

2008 Bradley Award Winner

Amanda Parrish in recent road race action

The Greater Boston Track Club announces the winner of the 2008 Margaret Bradley Award to
Amanda Parrish, a Bradley teammate.

When Amanda Parrish arrived at the University of Chicago from her native Westport, CT she knew no one. On an early workout out to the Lakefront that was to be at tempo pace freshman Amanda kept up with senior Margaret Bradley for many miles mostly because she found the conversation so good. Then Margaret said to Amanda, "Ok, now we are going to pick it up to tempo pace." Amanda was forced to confess that she was already running at her tempo pace and that she could go no faster. By senior year she could go much faster, (38:41 10 km) but owes much of her college success to Margaret's welcoming ways. "

On Amanda's first day of pre-season at Chicago she found it scary not knowing anyone, but Captain-of-the-Team, Margaret Bradley, careful not to leave freshman festering in the dorm, made sure they got out to discover the good restaurant deals in the city. By her senior year Amanda herself was captain of the track and cross-country teams at the University of Chicago.

Amanda Parrish went on to become a history major at the University of Chicago graduating in ('04) and is now finishing her master's degree in English Literature with an emphasis on creative writing. Just this week she passed her master's comprehensive exam at grad school in Washington, DC. She will be applying for High school English teaching jobs in the fall and hopes to keep writing fiction, continue coaching (which she has been doing for the past two years). As for running plans, she' says, "I'd like to continue to focus on longer events because my favorite kind of training runs are long tempos, fartleks and long distance runs. I'm not sure that I have the leg speed for a 5k anymore! Although, I do still really enjoy short summer road races and have loved coaching as a new way to be involved in the sport."

Lately Amanda Parrish has run the following:

Vermont City Marathon in 2006 in 3:25
Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in 2007 in 1:06:06
Philadelphia Distance Run in 2007 in 1:31

Her PRs for other distances are 18:41 for 5k and 38:40 for 10k (2004), 2:13 for 30k (2006) and 1:30 for the half marathon (2006 Caesar Rodney Half Marathon, 2006)

Margaret L. Bradley was a member of GBTC who died while on a trail run through the Grand Canyon on July 10, 2004, at the age of 24. Margaret ran the 2003 Chicago marathon in 2:58:52, and led the GBTC women's team to victory in the 2004 Boston marathon with a time of 3:04:54, finishing as 31st woman. Margaret lived in Chicago in 2003 and 2004, and while living there she competed with the Universal Sole track club.

GBTC and Universal Sole have jointly established the Margaret Bradley award in honor of Margaret. The intent of the award is to send one runner annually from GBTC to compete in the Chicago marathon and to bring one runner annually from Universal Sole to compete in the Boston marathon. The two clubs intend for the award to continue in perpetuity for the purpose of recognizing and aiding aspiring young, female marathoners who are of similar ability to that of Bradley. The award covers the travel expenses of the selected athlete. A member of the local club will host the visiting athlete while she is in either city for the race.

Donations to the Margaret Bradley Endowment fund can be made through the GBTC web site: http://www.gbtc.org/
There is also a list a previous recipients of the award and links to articles about Margaret Bradley's life and death.

GBTC At Northeastern Solomon Husky Invite

The ageless Dave Cahill who can run, jump, and count money.

April 12, 2008
Northeastern Solomon Husky Invitational
Dedham, MA
By Francis Shen

In Dedham today, GBTC red was prominent as a group of 8 men and 5
women took advantage of some unexpectedly sunny weather by running
and jumping their way to a number of impressive performances. Star
sprinter Christian Tirella won the 400m (49.01), surged to nearly win
the 200m (22.33), was 4th in the long jump (5.86m), and was coaxed
into coming back for the winning 4x400m (3:27.56)

The day started off with GBTC in the steeple chase. Matt Lyons braved
the barriers first (11:32.17), and Victoria Barnaby (11:42.32) and
Dee Clark (13:00.25) made very successful steeple debuts. Dee led the
pack early, and ran a strong race throughout. Victoria moved up
through the race, and her time was better than every college runner,
just a half-second behind a New Balance athlete in second, and only
:12 seconds behind first place. What an incredible first-time race!
After the race, a visibly excited Barnaby was overheard saying that
she's found her race. (And to put it in perspective -- this time was
just :30 second off the D-II and D-III nationals provisional qualifiers!).

In other barrier-related results, the ageless wonder Dave Cahill was
4th in the 400m hurdles in 56.91, while yours truly was a few places
behind in 58.03. Earlier in the day I managed a 15.61 for the 110
hurdles, employing good technical advice from Mike Servizio. Mike ran
the 200m (27.16) was just a hair shy of breaking :27 and held off a
charging Mass Velocity foe in the inside lane. Mike also won the
prize for obtaining the "parking spot closest to the track" --
parking next to the starting line.

GBTC dominated the women's 5k. Allison McCabe ran away from the
competition finishing first in 17:54.58. Liz Kelly was not far
behind, finishing a strong third in 18:27.06. In the women's 1500m,
Ronnesia Gaskins (4:56.12) out-kicked Tufts and took 4th.

At the triple jump pit, Erik Hoagland opened his season with a jump
of 13.28m, good for second place. Charly Clerge opened up in the 400m
with a 58.19. Also in the 400m, Andrew Guida clocked a 55.44, then
came back to anchor the 4x400m (Cahill-Shen-Tirella-Guida) in a sub :54 run.

The Comeback Kit and the Kates

Beth Coughlin, Katie Fobert, Kate Klim at Cohasset, MA

After a long time nursing injuries Kit Wells returned to racing placing second here as he did last year. He ran his fastest six individual miles all in a row faster than he had been able to run any miles all year. His return will be a big help to the team in the coming Grand Prix team races.
The women's team of Kate Klim, Katie Fobert, and Beth Coughlin easily outperformed any women's team.
If you go to: http://www.coolrunning.com/results/08/ma/Apr6_Cohass_set1.shtml you can see all the results.

These three women and others will compose the GBTC team for the Boston Marathon. The team has a good chance to win the team prize that is scored by adding together the times of the fastest three runners from any officially entered and declared club. Lowest score wins.
