Tara Vance Wins Women's ES 20

I told Tara Vance that if she could put herself in a position to win and later see if it is possible, and not treat it as mere preparation for the Boston Marathon. Every race is real. At an open race we never know who will show up to run or what condition they will be in. Tara Vance took the lead from ailing teammate Marian Bihrle at 12 miles. Marian placed third and is nursing a sore hamstring.

From Kittery ME to Salisbury MA GBTC men dominated the race in preparation for their bid to win the team prize again in the Boston Marathon. I confessed to putting a great deal of pressure on these runners. I told them when they left for the race that since I had asked the race director for complimentary entry for them that they had to run from the front, win or die.
Giannis Papadopoulos confirmed that ancient Greek Mothers would tell their sons who went off to battle to come home victorious with their shield or carried dead upon it. They came home victorious.

Weekend Preview: March 28-30

Greater Boston TC will divide and conquer at three venues this weekend: the Tufts Snowflake Classic, the USA Masters Indoor Championships, and the Eastern States 20M. This arrangement is fitting, as the winter's indoor workouts are through and the club transitions next week back to training en plein aire. Click the link below for the full details and complexities.

Tufts
Seven GBTC athletes will take it to the snow, cold and blue track of Tufts. For women, Tessa Clare in the 200m and Nicole Bucala in 5000m. For the men, Erik Hoagland in the long and triple jump as well as the 100m. Matt Schiller goes long in the 1500m, while Andrew Guida goes short in the 400m/200m double. Danny Colina throws the spear while Christian Tirella sprints in the 200m.

Masters
Back in the warmth of Reggie Lewis TAC, 16 of the older members of GBTC will compete in the USATF Masters National Championship. We'll see action from Dave Cahill in a quadruple including the 60m hurdles, 400m, 800m and 4x400m. Joining him in the 800m and 4x400 will be Aaron Binkley. Francis Shen will join him in the 60m hurdles, while Dave Callum will join him in the 400m and 4x400m. Wayne Burwell with join us in the 400m and he will contest the 60m dash. Indu Conley is planning a trifecta with the 60m, 200m and 400m while Sarah Lawson is entered in the 60m and 200m.

Jim Watts will join the younger men in a 4x400m, while also entered among the top seeds in the 400m and 800m in the 45-49 age group. Mike Servizio and Chris McConnell plan a 400m and 4x400m double, but their open 200m is backup for the relay. Bruno Marino and Tom Goulet will run this 4x400m as well. Dan Kelly and Gary Snyder are expected in the 60m and 200m among 60+ guys, while Bill Newsham and Brian Hare go long in the 3000m.

Eastern States
Up in Maine, our guys, Bedoya and Bonner are going to race for the win as will our women, Bihrle and Vance. There should be some high ranking additions to the race's historical list of top times. Others such as Papadopoulos, Pak, and Hall are going to race with the leaders for as long as possible. Wesolowski will try hard not to get lost or miscount laps. Johnson, Famous, and Derderian will race the concurrent half marathon.

Urban Hurdling

Watch GBTC's hurdlers do their drills and much more in the new, straight to YouTube release of Urban Hurdling: Boston. Be amazed as teammates hurdle past Fanieul Hall, Fenway, the Fleet Center, the Pru, Boston Common, Beacon Hill, the Charles River, and many other Boston favorites. Also available through YouTube are related Bonus Scenes and a One Minute Highlight Reel.

This has also been featured on the March 26 front page of boston.com!

The video was filmed last October, and features Jessica Klett, Dave Cahill, Francis Shen, and our urban hurdling guru, Coach Dave Callum. Sara O'Brien provided the location for the coolest shot of the video, and helped throughout the day. Matt Collins loaned his hurdles, and Steve Vaitones originally floated the idea in 2007.
