Slip Sliding in Derry
The January 16 mile race in Derry, NH is known as the "Boston Prep 16 miler." Supposedly its arrangement of hills is good preparation for the Boston marathon. Well, if Patriots' Day brings a snowstorm to Boston this April, several GBTC members will be well prepared. An inch of snow had fallen by race time, and the local roads of Derry on which this race takes place were in no danger of getting plowed or even cleared by passing cars. Temperatures were steady in the mid 20s - not bad racing weather really, although again perhaps not the best prep for Boston - and snow fell throughout the race. On the uphills and flats it was often hard to make good forward progress, while downhills and corners presented ample opportunity to wipe out. The hills were certainly good preparation for something - next cross country season perhaps.
