The GBTC open men's and women's teams will go to the 2007 USATF Club Cross-Country Nationals in West Chester, Ohio on December 8th. Today they both placed 3rd in the USATF New England Cross Cross-country Championships. But what a difference a year's training makes! Allison McCabe ran her best cross country race of the season, and maybe her life, in the women's 6km finishing 8th in 21:43 improving from her last year's 11th in 22:18, Gretchen Chick improved by running 22:06 for 13th compared to 42nd in 24:10 last year. Jen Lee ran 15th in 22:11 compared to 32nd in 23:41 last year. Liz Kelly ran 22:56 this year compared to 23:18 last year and Sloan Siegrist ran 22:47 compared to 23:24 last year.

The only new scoring runner for the women's team was Princeton grad Marian Bihrle.

The team has been a delight to watch with the team leader changing for every race.

The team third as they did last year but only 2 points behind the national champion BAA. This result means our team is likely to earn its highest place in history in the club nationals next month.

In the New England Cross-Country Grand Prix the GBTC team tied in season points with SISU so will have to split the the cash prize of $300.

Cynthia Hastings won overall women's 50+ grand prix prize.

Kibrom Temelso ran with the lead pack as long as he could then held on for 12 palce to lead the team. The big news for the men's race is Matt Haringa running his best race ever while representing the club. Brad Kozel ran 35:30 last year and improved to 33:13. Ted Breen matched his time from last year by seconds and Junyong Pak improved by nearly a minute.

The men's team will also be off to the club nationals in December with their improved New England ranking.

Double Bronze at New England XC

The GBTC open men and women both secured third place finishes at the New England Cross Country Championship on November 18th. The women's race was extremely close, with merely 20 seconds distinguishing GBTC from 2nd place BAA. Meanwhile, the men's team finish was more secure, yet an average finishing time of 32:43 for our top five shows promise for the upcoming National Club Championships in Ohio on December 8. Bonstelle, Davie, and Lang mint PRs in Philadelphia

Final results show a trifecta of brilliant races on November 18th at the Philadelphia Marathon. Davie's quantum leap forward of over 14 minutes after 11 years of lingering marathon-itis complimented the constant improvements of more seasoned veterans, Lang and Bonstelle. Also in attendance were John Blouin from GBTC-West, placing 24th in the accompanying half-marathon, and the unstoppable Chris Smith on his own marathon-specific dress-rehearsal.

Bruce Davie 1:23:39 2:46:51 74 64
Michelle Lang 1:35:07 3:06:10 362 47
Christy Bonstelle 1:35:45 3:09:29 469 57
6910 Finishers (Results as of December 8, 2007)
Unfortunately, the final results were not fully resolved until December 8th. It appears that some serious timing errors were made by the race directors or their equipment vendors, resulting in initially incorrect or omitted finishing times.

GBTC Men's Team 2nd in NYC Marathon

On November 4, 2007 in New York City the GBTC men's team placed second behind the all-Ethiopian Westchester TC team and ahead of a Polish team.
David Bedoya had taken a risk and gone out hard to try to break his Boston PR of 2:25 and stay out of the wind with a pack running 2:23 pace. It did not work but he hung on to finish close to team leader, Kit Wells. Youngster Nate Freese ran a well-paced first marathon to round out the team score.

Women Win in Amherst, NH, men 2nd X-C GP

Up and over and down and around the equestrian trails around a postcard pretty pond the teams raced in this penultimate USATF New England Grand Prix race. The GBTC women won regardless of Morgan's perilous running off course with about 20 seconds left to run. (she would have been in the 21s)
The men took second to SISU.
Not bad for a club splitting teams between New York and New Hampshire with a marathon in the middle.
The women's overall series score is 66 SISU to 60 GBTC. It all depends upon the New Englands. Not only does GBTC have to beat SISU but so do several other teams to put GBTC up enough points for the win.
The men are in a distant second.
Then on to Ohio for the Nationals.

Greater Boston in New York

In the Olympic Trials marathon on Saturday November 3, former GBTC member Marzuki Stevens finished a creditable 70th place out of 134 starters and 101 finishers, recording a time of 2:25:18. It is notable that fewer than half the finishers completed the hilly course in a time less than the 2:22 required to qualify for the race, which says something about the difficulty of the conditions and perhaps also the tendency to run more aggressively in a trials race.

GBTC was well represented in the New York marathon on the Sunday. Provisional results are below; we await stories and team scores. Apparently the second half was challenging for everyone.
