Audrey Giesler receives Margaret Bradley Award

Audrey Giesler in the Westford 5k, May 2007

The Greater Boston Track Club is pleased to announce that Audrey Giesler will be the GBTC recipient of this year's Margaret Bradley award. Like Margaret, Audrey has lived in both Boston and Chicago and has represented both of Margaret's former clubs - GBTC and Chicago's Universal Sole. Audrey ran a time of 2:50:45 in her marathon debut in Chicago last year, and has been a key member of the GBTC women's road-racing squad since moving to Boston in 2006. "Like Margaret, Audrey came through for the team time and again," says GBTC coach Tom Derderian. Audrey recently returned to Chicago but will race the marathon as a GBTC member.

Margaret L. Bradley was a member of GBTC who died while on a trail run through the Grand Canyon on July 10, 2004, at the age of 24. Margaret ran the 2003 Chicago marathon in 2:58:52 and led the GBTC women's team to victory in the 2004 Boston marathon with a time of 3:04:54, finishing as 31st woman. Margaret lived in Chicago in 2003 and 2004, and while living there she competed with the Universal Sole track club.

GBTC and Universal Sole have jointly established the Margaret Bradley award in honor of Margaret. The intent of the award is to send one runner annually from GBTC to compete in the Chicago marathon and to bring one runner annually from Universal Sole to compete in the Boston marathon. The two clubs intend for the award to continue in perpetuity for the purpose of recognizing and aiding aspiring young, female marathoners who are of similar ability to that of Bradley.

Men Harvest Apples

The 2007 New England men's open USATF Grand Prix 10 mile Championship Team
Avi Kramer, Kibrom Temelso, Ryan Aschbrenner, Giannis Papadopoulos, David Bedoya photo by Derderian

I effortlessly rode my bike down a sun dappled lane in wealthy, bucolic, Harvard MA in perfect autumn weather. Next to my cocoon of pleasantness ran Avi Kramer and two Boston Athletic Association runners in a death dual in the uphill ninth mile in pursuit of a dying Greater Lowell runner. None of them could summon anything like a kick out of the thickness of their own fatigue. I watched their slow-motion agony like prize fighters in the ring too long who could only throw pitiful punches at each other. No one produced a knockout kick. Slowly the big BAA runner passed the shrinking Lowell runner and slowly Avi Kramer shuffled away from the other BAA runner.

This molasses shuffle played and replayed as each group of the 548 finishers readjusted their order of finish in the last mile's battle against gravity.

But through it all the Greater Boston Track Club men's team won the open championships over the BAA and all other teams to launch into a lead in the year's USATFNE Grand Prix series.

Women and Men Net Codfish

Gretchen Chick won on this hot summery day with last year's winner Allison McCabe close behind while GBTC packed seven runners into the top ten winning the meet by a monstrous margin. For GBTC this race is a dry run on the highly contested Mayor's Cup course.
The men's team won by a mere 4 points over the New York Institute of Technology and the BAA. Only one second separated the total team time scores. Every second does count.
The Mayor's Cup race goes on October 28th.
On this 40th Anniversary of the Codfish Bowl founded by GBTC's original coach, Bill Squires saw the "Coach" present and active. At one point he rushed out to help a heat-stressed runner. Later he joined the club for lunch (at the club's invitation and expense) at nearby Doyle's where he filled all nearby with story after story. The club is most grateful for his contributions over the decades.

Avi Leads NE Grand Prix

Avi Leads NE Grand Prix

Avi Kramer has accumulated more points in the New England USATF Grand Prix series than anyone. With five of seven events run Kramer has a two point lead over Greater Lowell's Ben Ndaya. Kramer has not finished worst that fifth in any of the three Grand Prix races he ran. His best place was second in the Groton 10 km. If he can maintain his lead in the remaining two races, the Harvard 10 miler on Sept 30, and the Cape Cod Marathon on Oct 28th, he would join the select company of previous winners, Casey and Pat Moulton, Nate Jenkins, Craig Fram, and Dave Dunham going back until the start of the individual scoring in 1986. http://www.usatfne.org/road/gphistoryindividual.html

Women Win Hot Ollie 5 Mile NE Grand Prix

Bruce Davie Fighting the heat at Ollie Photo by Scott Raymond

No one felt good running in the heat of the Ollie. No one ran their fastest. But most everyone ran their hardest. But hottest of all was the Greater Boston Women's team as they put all five scorers in the top ten! They won by over a minute beating the Merrimack Valley Striders and the Boston Athletic Association.

1. GREATER BOSTON TRACK CLUB

ALLISON MCCABE 25, EMILY RAYMOND 25, GRETCHEN CHICK
26, LAURA HAYDEN 27, ELIZABETH KELLY 22

The women's team had such depth that the next five GBTC women would have formed a top scoring club. Avi Kramer led the men's team to fourth place behind the Central Mass Striders with whom they had been tied for first place.
Now both open team are in second place in the New England Grand Prix with two races remaining in the year's series.

Maybe Tomoaki Uchiki ran the hardest of all because he tripped over some metal during his cool down and wound up in the emergency room. He had to have stitches on his leg and broke one bone in each forearm. He said," My legs were OK except that I got a wound on my shin which was closed by two stiches. My arms were however broken somewhat. Both of my lower arms (I think the bone called fibula (sic)) and a bone close to my left thumb fractured. Fortunately, I did not have to receive any operation, and I was told that they will be healed in 4 to 6 weeks."

Front Runner Wins

Before the Cape Ann 25 km road race I told GBTC runners Kibrom Temelso and Nate Freese to go to the front and run because it is the most risky place to be and the most fun. They did. With bloody feet Kibrom finished first with Nate running the longest race of his life hanging on for fourth place. Club President Bruce Davie won the master's division and all of our men finished in the top 20 out of 574 finishers on this warm, dry summer day.
Placing six men in the top 20 won the team prize and a check for $100. Kibrom got $200 for the win.
