The Greater Boston Track Club (GBTC) is a friendly and competitive team with approximately 200 members. We compete at the national, regional, and local levels in cross country, track and field, and trail running. GBTC provides a team-oriented, structured training environment for athletes of many abilities who train for everything from jumps and throws to sprints, road races, cross country, and marathons. Members train for several specific competitions throughout the year, and financial support is provided to compete at some major events.

GBTC continues to be a leader in the region's post-collegiate running tradition. The club was founded in 1973 when six local college graduates asked coach Bill Squires to help them create a running club for track athletes to continue running after graduation. The club achieved immediate success in the 1970s, including winning multiple national cross-country and road racing titles, placing four of the top 10 at the 1979 Boston Marathon, and scoring a record low 26 points at the national cross-country championships. More recently, GBTC’s women’s and men’s teams placed second at the 2006 USATF club national track and field championship and third and fourth, respectively, in the 2007 Boston Marathon team championship.

The club offers its membership the following services:

  • Coached weekly workouts:
    • Tuesday and Thursday night track workouts
    • Occasional Saturday hill workouts
  • Major GBTC-run events:
  • Other club perks:
    • Logistical support for meet entry
    • Coaching from well-known, experienced coaches
    • Year-round access to indoor and outdoor track facilities
    • Discounts at local running shops, such as Marathon Sports
    • Club apparel at reasonable costs
    • Weekend long runs at Walden Pond in Lincoln, MA
    • Annual holiday party and other social events

GBTC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. The team is governed by a board of directors elected each year by the general membership. All GBTC members are invited to attend the monthly board meetings.  The following documents explain the organization and operation of the GBTC:
