Sea of Red in Providence – Women 1st, Men 3rd

GBTC Women led the charge during this weekend’s USATF-New England 5km Championship at CVS Downtown 5k in Providence, Rhode Island. Led by Alexandra Conway (8th Woman / 17:37.6), the Greater Boston women defeated second place Craft Concept Racing by a mere 26 seconds. Veteran member Allison McCabe (9th / 17:41) and first-time GBTC-er Shelby Cuddeback (14th / 17:58) rounded out the team’s Top 3.

The Greater Boston men were led by David Metzger (10th Man / 15:19) in a star studded “Who’s Who?” of New England’s finest 5km runners. Finishing in third behind the newly-formed Ocean State Athletic Club and Western Mass Distance Project, the GBTC men surely made a statement that will move them up in the Grand Prix standings.

The Old Coach’s New Book

Coach Tom Derderian’s book chronicles the past 120 years of racing at the Boston Marathon.

Coach Tom Derderian is well known in the world of track, cross country and road running. His running accomplishments include running in the Olympic trials in both 1972 and 1976, numerous New England road championships, and a 2:19:04 Boston Marathon in 1975. As a coach, Derderian continues to help GBTC find success on roads, tracks and trails.

Another notable accomplishment for Coach Derderian comes in the form of pen to paper, as he shares a wealth of knowledge about the world’s oldest and most prestigious road race: The Boston Marathon. The newest edition of Tom’s book, Boston Marathon: Year-by-Year Stories of the World’s Premier Running Event, is now available for purchase. Complete with more than one hundred photographs and results from every year, this Boston Marathon encyclopedia belongs on the shelf of every runner.

Pick up a copy at this year’s Boston Marathon Expo (Booth 1305), or have one delivered right to your door! Get yourself a copy before the IAAF declares the book an illegal performance enhancer (credit to Tom for this …excellent… joke)!

Marathoners to Wear ’70s-Era Uniforms at Boston

With the 2017 Boston Marathon just days away, GBTC is excited to announce that this year’s marathon team will wear a 1970s-inspired white singlet.

In the early years, after a local guy named Bill Rodgers (ever heard of him…?) won Boston in a hand-drawn GBTC t-shirt, the club adopted red and white as their official colors. They’ve worn many uniforms over the years, but it was the earliest marathon teams in white tops and red shorts that put Greater Boston TC in the national spotlight.

Over 30 GBTC members will make the annual trek from Hopkinton to Boston on Monday, April 17th. Be on the lookout for the new white singlet, and feel free to join our cheering section in Coolidge Corner. Good luck to all who are racing on Monday!

Weber Named 2017 Bradley Award Recipient

Madeline Weber (right), with Mary Jo and Keith Bradley

Madeline Weber, veteran member and current GBTC President, is the 2017 Margaret Bradley Award Recipient. Madeline has excelled on roads and trails since joining the club, and her dedication to the club has shown through on many occasions. Madeline received the 2016 Coaches Award, and was most recently named president by her fellow board members. She is frequently a scoring member at Grand Prix and Cross-Country races, and has found success on the roads from 5k to the marathon.

Margaret L. Bradley was a member of GBTC who died while on a trail run through the Grand Canyon on July 10, 2004, at the age of 24. An accomplished marathoner, Margaret led the GBTC women to a team victory at the 2004 Boston Marathon. GBTC established the Margaret Bradley Award in honor of Margaret. The intent of the award is to select one GBTC female runner annually to compete in a domestic event of her choosing for which GBTC will cover some or all of the expenses. The selected recipient must be a club member in good standing who shares Margaret’s enthusiasm and dedication toward both personal and team goals.

The end of the 2016-2017 Indoor Track & Field season also means the start of the 2017 USATF-NE Grand Prix. GBTC split their squad this weekend to compete both indoors and on the roads. A small contingent of athletes took to the indoor track at Boston University’s annual Last Chance Meet, while much of the distance squad made the trek to Amherst for Sugarloaf Mountain Athletic Club’s annual 10 Miler.
